Alienware 17 R2, no sound

Unable to get sound on laptop.  Worked just fine a few hours before this.  Tried the troubleshooter, rolling back the driver, checking for updates and system restore (unable to restore, no restore point).  Any other suggestions?

Hello. Try downloading and installing a fresh copy of your Creative audio driver even though it is not an updated one. Go to the Alienware 17 R2 support page and use the small blue "Change OS" button to select your operating system (7, 8, or 8.1). Then expand the Audio category and obtain the driver. If the driver files had become corrupted, the fresh driver will fix it.

I don't know about the 17 R2 model but the other Alienwares have a BIOS based diagnostic tool named ePSA. You could run its Audio Quick Check test if you have not done so yet. It is not one of the main tests but a button on the bottom right side of the ePSA main menu screen.

You could post in the Alienware Club section of the Dell forum.

If the problem persists you could reset the laptop back to the original factory configuration (perform a system recovery). Either the problem will go away or will be confirmed to be hardware failure.
