Blue Screen on New XPS 16 (BSOD)

Today I got my new xps 16 Laptop, and at first it was all working fine. I closed the laptop and went upstairs, opened, all still working fine. I then plugged in the internet and windows did 2 updates, McAfee also did an update. I then restarted because of the updates. All was still working fine, then I close the laptop and come back a short time later and open it up.. I see the sign in screen for a second and then I get the blue screen, it restarts goes to a black screen and I select start windows normally and then i can sign in and it is all normal again.

this problem seems to happen everytime I open the screen (went to blue screen once as I closed it). I did try to update the BIOS drivers but the one on Dells website was older then my current one. I have also tried to do a system restore but it couldn't be restored to thepoint I picked.

what should I do??

:(

Right, i've been on the phone to the tech support at Dell, and im glad he called me back - i was on the phone to him for 2 and a half hours OMG :O

In the end all he did was uninstall the last update applied to my pc and it worked, after we reinstalled every driver possible.

it ended up with microsoft update fighting the USB driver from dell. so for now its sorted, when shall i update my pc next? dunno.

later maybe...

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem today after downloading the latest updates from Microsoft. After removing them the problem went away.

These are the updates I removed:

(KB973874) (KB970653) (KB972036) (KB973879)

See if you have any of those updates installed. Remove them and post a response so I know if that resolved the issue.

after removing 4 downloads as krispy23 did my studio1555 has not bluescreened.  i pressed wireless/bluetooth key(f2), printer usb cable in and out and closed laptop lid to sleep and all worked okay this time.  there was another update today i had kb968389 which was installed at same time so i removed that also.

only problem i have now is update wants to install them again so what do i do now?

Totally agree with the last post. The issue is with KB973879. I have applied this update today to 3 Inspiron 1545 laptops, all of which are running vista home premium 64 bit and all have crashed with a BSOD. Removing and hiding the update is a valid workaround but as the Vista 64 bit service pack 2 won't install either I think its time Dell and Microsoft tech support started talking to each other as there seems to be a significant problem here that one or both needs to resolve. I have logged the problem with Dell tech support by email but am not holding my breath.

We have a XPS 16 that is only 1 week old.  It is my daughter's computer that she uses for school.  Everything started with the webcam not working yesterday, and then it would spontaneously reboot.  I did a system restore to how it was a week ago after I had done all of the updates, and that didn't help at all.  Now I am getting the BSOD regularly with very similar content to what is displayed in other posts here.  I have uninstalled all of the updates going back to the 19th, keeping those that were originally put on the day I got it.  I guess we'll see

I agree - it is a fix - I was having the same blue screen problems whenever I took unplugged anything from the usb ports on my Studio 17.  Uninstalling KB973879 did the trick - thank you!!!  I thought I was going crazy & was getting very upset considering I haven't had the computer for a week yet.

I have now changed the microsoft update from auto to alert me.

I am in the USA.

Ok so I have confirmed that uninstalling update KB973879 does fix the problem (Dell studio 1555 - one week old).

But now windows is prompting me to install Service Pack 2.

My instincts tell me that this is a horrible idea...do you all agree?

I plan on sticking with SP1 vista 64bit and just upgrading to Windows7 when it comes out ASAP.

Same problem, and thanks a million for the fix. Brand new laptop, works perfectly, very happy. Download a Windows update automatically and bingo, suddenly, just like a virus, my computer starts to go wrong. What did I do wrong? Open the lid of the laptop and BSOD. Outlook complains of a blue-tooth add in, so I unistall that, windows tells me there is a problem with my phone driver. So I eventually stop all blue-tooth connections on both my phone and laptop. Same problem.

One look at this web page, uninstall KB973879 and suddenly everything works just fine.

So a Windows update seems even worse than a virus, so what is the solution? Is this Dell's problem or Microsoft's?

But thanks a million for all the effort, it saved me. :-)

Just uninstalled that update aswell (KB973879) and it seems to be fixed for me aswell :) iv'e tried with two different USB'S and they eject without a problem im guessing its fixed with the lid closing thing aswell, but i'm not going to update again until I get windows 7.

I forgot to mention that I was also having keyboard issues that seem to have been corrected as well.  What I typed wasn't showing up correctly (letters missing, etc.) and I was getting a big lag in keyboard to screen response time.  That was really irritating, but seems to be working ok now.

My Studio 1555 started this and the "Dell Dock" is totally hosed, I have uninstalled KB973879 and "Dell Dock" and the machine is back to proper operation when you close the lid and try to hibernate it; however, when I attempted to reinstall "dell dock" it was a no go... I can live without dell dock but it is somewhat irritating when the machine is less than three weeks old and it doesn't work as advertised.

One more thing - Supports answer after two hours, "reinstall the OS".

BTW, are any of the other four (4) windows updates (other than KB973879) installed a problem that anyone knows about?
