Bluescreens started to appear

Looks like I cannot track what is causing it. I have not installed new hardware, but some new softwares like Stonegate vpn. Few times my Alienware m17r4 has also said that my gpu has stopped working. I have attached the minidumbs, so please ask anything if something could help to solve this problem.

Hi Viceman,

I would suggest you to run the on-board Dell diagnostics. Please refer Run Built-In Diagnostics for Your System

You may also watch this video Diagnose Hardware Issues on Your Dell Computer

If diagnostics does not show any error, you may provide me the minidump files. Please follow the steps listed to provide the minidump files. We will decode this folder to understand the root cause of the issue that you have been facing:

- Navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump and tap
- Copy all the 'Minidump' folders and paste them to your desktop screen
- Please attach these folders in your next reply.
- Let me check the 'Minidump' folder with a debugging tool to see if we get decisive results

Note: The minidump folders will be .exe folders. You will not be able to attach .exe files on this forum. Right click on each .exe folder and select 'Send to' and then select 'Compressed (Zipped) folder'. A zip file will be created which you can attach here.

In case you are unable to attach the dump here, then email me dumps on the email address. I have already sent it to you via private message.

Hi Viceman,

Thank you for the details. I reviewed the minidump files. There were multiple bug check codes due to which the blue screen has appeared. You may have to perform operating system re-installation.

Would request you to run the diagnostics and share the results; will proceed further.

I ran the diagnostics, and they didnt show any errors. Many times the bluescreen appears when laptop hasn't been used for a while. Screen is black and I think its going to "sleep state" or something. When the screen have been shut down for a while, it just goes into blue screen. It happened just while ago. Also when i once pressed the fn+f1 key combo (suspend) the blue screen popped up. Can this be a hardware problem?

And If I re-install the OS. How do I do that? I didn't receive any media for Windows. I have a backup from my windows about six months ago. It is in my USB-stick. How do I recover the windows from it? Will it do the trick?

Hi Viceman,

I would suggest you to update the video drivers from this link http://dell.to/GONPkz -> choose the operating system -> expand Video. First download and install Intel Graphics driver. Then download and install Nvidia or AMD video drivers.

To check which card is installed on your system, you can go to Device Manager -> press and hold Windows key + R -> type devmgmt.msc to open Device Manager -> expand Display Adapters. Check the name of the card.

If you still get blue screen error after updating video drivers, then you can use the USB that you have created to restore the computer to factory defaults. To use the USB stick, .power off the computer -> restart the computer, press 'F12' key on the Dell logo -> Select ‘USB Device/Removable Device’ from the boot menu. Press Enter. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Note: This step leads to complete data loss including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications. Please disconnect any external peripherals as well.

I reinstalled the drivers and looks like it reduced the amount of bluescreens. And I noticed that the bluescreen doesn't appear when you are playining. It happens when you are doing something light with Windows (browsing net, or just let it be idle). And last night it also gave the bluescreen when I pressed the FN+F1 (suspend). When I press that key kombination, the bluescreen appears most often. What can cause that? Can it be a hardware problem?

Hi Viceman,

Thank you for the update. Did you run the diagnostics as I have shared in my first response? If not, please run the diagnostics and share the findings. This is to check the hardware functionality.

I did run the diagnostics, but there was no errors and it lasted veeery long. And some point it asked for more memory tests, in that point I called off. No errors were shown. I will do it again as soon as I get back home. How do I share the diagnostic results? I mean does it save the information somewhere?

Hi Viceman,

Thank you for the response. Would request you to share the minidump files so that I can analyze it. Also, share the result of the diagnostics. Diagnostics doesn't save information. If there is any fault in any hardware component, then you would receive an error message. If there isn't, then all the tests would pass.

that kind of message started to appear when turned on.After I hit the F1 key to continue, the blue screen appeared:

And the icon on low right corner just said that this is connected and recharging, but it was not recharging. After i unplugged the AC and plugged it again. It started charging. I attached two latest minidumb files also.

I tried to restore the windows from my usb-stick, but it doesn't work. And the windows says that it I must format the usb-stick if I want to use it. If I try to boot from it, it just opens Windows.

I did't got any media with my laptop, so How can I make a new clean install of Windows? Please help quick.
