Can I run with only 1 of 2 memory slots occupied?

I have a Dell XPS17 with 4 GB of RAM. The memory is allocated as 2 modules of 2 GB each, and the laptop has only 2 slots.

I would like to increase to 8 GB RAM. Can I run a single SODIMM of 8 GB, leaving the second memory slot empty for now (in case I want to add more in the future)? Or do I need to run with both slots occupied?

unless you are running memory intensive programs you won't notice a difference

It will  however, cut your memory bandwith and therefore reduce performance.
