Code 28 on PCI bus ACPI\SMO8800
Code 28 on PCI bus ACPI\SMO8800
Hi i have an unknown device in my device manager. in propertis it shows this message - "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" i cannot update the driver windows cannot find the driver. Under the details tab property is: hardware Ids value ACPI\SMO8800 and *SMO8800.
I have found out that this is an accelerometer, a device that detects when your laptop may be falling and instantly stops the hard disk so it isn’t damaged on impact.
The dell has a link to the driver on for the freefall sensor but it is not compatible with my xps or is it?
Will that driver update my (xps L702X windows 7 x64) unknown device?

i am checking to see if you have tried the driver from the following link
It should be the driver for the free fall sensor.

If your notebook is an XPS L702X the correct motion sensor driver may be found from the following link
www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats
The driver that you pointed out above is for the XPS L701X, that system has a different chipset and line of processors then the L702X. Give it a go and please report back here if you continue to have problems.

Smitette
I dont believe that the Studio 1558 used a motion sensor and no driver for one is listed. What is the exact error that you receive, how often do you receive it, and what is running on the notebook when you get the error?

In Device Manager, listed is "Other Devices" *Unknown Device. When I click on the "property manager" on this unknown device it states:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
It states that the location is: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
Hope that you can help me with this! It has been a mystery!

I need this driver too, but for M4500 XP 64 Pro. But Terry's links are giving me "We're sorry .. Details for this driver are currently unavailable". Other link giving me "Group not found". And on Dell Driver Support, for my Service Tag & O/S, the ST Microelectronics driver is not listed as recommended or even optional.
Where on the Dell site is this driver download (for my O/S) ??
Thanx much,
-JM

The 64 bit XP driver may be found from the following link. I certainly suggest that you install it.
