Yeah, I pretty much realized that.... I guess it has the 945GMS chipset which only allows the ULV. What happen to the power of the original D4XX series? Oh well....might have to move on to a Thinkpad ultraportable x60 that still has the regular Duo and still maints battery life (take a less dell). I think the D620 might be too big...

I'm not sure when they're planning to release it, but the Core Duo will also be a ULV model (the U2500, running at 1.2GHz). I don't think that using a normal Core Duo is an option - the system just doesn't have the space required to keep that CPU cool, and it'd hurt battery life too.

It may be a bit less powerful than the older D400 and D410 - but it's also quite a bit lighter and somewhat smaller (because it's widescreen). I assume that Dell are aiming to make it the real "ultra-portable, ultra-mobile" version; for people who want more performance there's the D620.

If the D620 is too large for you, then you'll have to look at other brands - but I don't think any brand offers something as small and light as the D420 for anything like that price.

Yeah, i understand what they were doing, but thats what the X1 was for. It was the true ultraportable. The D420 is planned to replace both the D410 and the X1. I just wish they would have kept them separate. I'd hate to go somewhere else because I've good luck with all my dell notebooks and desktops.

I think I noticed that the D620 has gotten slightly thinner and maybe 0.3 lbs lighter than the D610 since it went to the wide aspect... Does anyone have both these systems who can confirm this? or an even better comparison...does anyone have a D400 or D410 that upgraded to the new D620? I see the D610s all over campus, but they are too big after being spoiled by the D400 (although the D400 is considered large for an ultraportable but I think it was great).

Dell United Kingdom web site lists the u2500 Core Duo as an option for the D420 as of this date. When the US site will offer it is anyones guess.
