D630 Sigmatel driver clash with older models (P380, P390)

Hi,

We use a single master image (Windows XP PRO - SP2) for deployment to all our new Dells (Desktop, Portable, Workstation).
I have just started updating the image for the D630 and have found that the driver listed on the Dell website (Sigmatel 5.10.0.5401).

The Inf file for this driver lists a large number of different harwdare as compatibly (P380, P390 included)
Unfortunetly this driver doesn't apperar to be backwards compatible and does not load correctly on the P380 or P390.

Anyone else come across this issue?

Steve,

The correct way to find which other models are compatible with a particular driver is to go to the driver download page and at the bottom click the link 'View compatible systems and operating systems'.

Doing this on the Sigmatel 5.10.0.5401 page for a Latitude D630 laptop yielded:

Latitude D531
Latitude D631
Latitude D630
Latitude D830
Dell Precision Mobile WorkStation M4300

I'm not sure what a P380 is so I tried the Precision WorkStation 380 and found its driver will also work with:

Dimension 9100
Dimension 3100/E310
Dimension 3100C
Dimension 5100
Dimension 5100C
Dimension 5150/E510
Dell Precision WorkStation 380
XPS/Dimension 200/5150C
XPS/Dimension 400/9150

To find the driver for a specific model I use the 'Driver & Downloads' link on the lower left.

Hi Jim,

Yes that is correct if you are installing drivers manually.
I produce a single sysprped master image and the drivers are installed during the mini-setup phase.

The drivers that are listed on the driver download page for the D630 have references to the older hardware in the driver file (R153908\WDM\STHDA.INF).

This means a newer driver will always be chossen over an older driver during the mini-setup phase of XP.

STHDA.INF version 02/19/2007,5.10.0.5401 lists the following hardware are compatible:

Steve,

I have the same circumstances as yourself. I'm working on a single image and once I added the D630 audio drivers I get the yellow bang ! in device manager for the P380, P390 and P690 models. This actually started with the D620 models. I removed the audio driver for the D620 models from our image and the problem was resolved. It appears that since Sigmatel changed from the stac97.cpl to the stacgui.cpl the issue has appeared. Even though they account for BOTH control applets in their stdha.inf file the Sigmatel control panel applet is NOT accessible for the desktop models (P380, P390, P690). If you come up with any resolution please keep me in the loop.

thanks,

Hi Darryl,

I used the following work around.
I kept the newer drivers in my master image, this is used on all harwdare.
I have a custom post sysprep phase that uses a combination of vbscript and batch to analsis the hardware and perform specific configuration based on that hardware.

I'm loading the older Dell audio drivers over the top on P380 & P390. This installs the older driver and everything is then working as expected.

I raised the issue with Dell (Aisa/Pacific Support) and the best they could do is suggest a diffrent image for each model! and that they would pass on the issue to thier developers.

So if you want a single image across all your hadware be aware your on your own as Dell don't seem to be able to offer any assistance.

Regards,

Steve

Steve,

Would you be willing to provide the custom post sysprep phase which includes the vbscript and batch file you're using to detect the Dell models? I going to follow your lead on adding the audio drivers for the later model laptops D630, D830 to the baseline image. I'm currently testing using the Microsoft devcon.exe utility to resolve the yellow bang ! that occurs when the Sigmatel version 5.10.0.5401 drivers are added to the baseline image and desktop models P380, P390 and P690. It actually works pretty well.

devcon update

example:
devcon update "c:\wksta\audio\sthda.inf" "HDAudio\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801DE"

The above syntax will load the Sigmatel for the P390 model

Have there been any updates on this issue?  I am having the same problem with these drivers.  I support several thousand systems and at least 150 of those are D630's.  Up until now, I haven't had any trouble with the Sigmatel drivers but this version seems to conlfict with every other Sigmatel driver that I am currently using.  If I remove conflicting device IDs from the INF file, other system begin to work but the D630s quit working.

The fact that Dell doesn't want to fix this problem is very frustrating.  Maintaining a seperate image specifically for the D630s is not an option.  Quite frankly I'm shocked that that was thier "fix action".
