DELL N5040 CPU FAN FAILURE / FAN CONSTANTLY ON HIGH
I have a Dell 15 N5040. The CPU fan died on me for no reason. I removed the keyboard and palm rest to find that the laptop that was bought brand new was missing the "4th" screw -- the one the ties down part of the thermal assembly to the video chip. I replaced it with a new fan -- and the fan spins on high constantly and failed the Dell Diagnostics. So I decided to try ANOTHER new fan -- plugged it in and same thing. Can anyone tell me what the problem could be? Could it be the fourth screw it's missing? It's not dust buildup or heat issues. Thanks.

Hi chauchylongboat,
The error message 2000-511 indicates fan failure. Please provide the validation code as well that you received along with the error message.
I recommend that you update the BIOS of the system to latest A05 version. Here are the steps:
Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.
Please observe the system performance after BIOS update. If the issue still persist hardware replacement may be required.
Please reply if you have any further questions.
