DELL XPS M1330 constantly freezing up - ARGH!

I have a Dell XPS M1330 that is freezing up at least 10x per day and i'm pulling my hair out trying to remedy the problem.    The freeze up can happen at any time and my PC locks up to the point where the cursor is frozen and any keyboard commands (CTL-ALT-DEL) fail to work.  The only way to get out of it is to hit the powerbutton and try to reboot.   My PC checks clean for antivirus, spyware, etc.

In terms of my laptop:

  • hardware config is what came when the unit shipped and i'm got all of the recommended firmware updates,
  • running Antivirus (ESET Nod 32), Windows Defender, Ad Aware, and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and the software is up to date and my PC has always checked out clean,
  • I was running Windows Visa (totally up to date) and recently updated to Windows 7 to see if updating the OS would remedy the problem since Vista has been problematic for me.  Unfortunately this freeze up issue still remains,
  • I've tried to run the PC in Dell's diagnostic boot mode but no hardware problems are picked up when I do this
  • Ive had several calls/live sessions with Dell Support but the problem persists,
  • my PC is under its full warranty (fix/replace)

Any ideas on what might be causing this problem and how to remedy?   To me it seems hardware related (i.e. memory, possibly bad HD) however it doesn't appear as if Dell will intervene unless this shows up in the diagnostic boot tests.     Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreaciated!

As a side note, i've also included my HijackThis log file below just in case.  Thanks for any assistance or advice you can provide!

I've exactly the same problem goin' on for past 1 month. I have 4Gb (2x2GB) OCZ RAm (part no OCZ2MV6674GK) pc2 5400 ddr2 667 ON MY xps M1330. My screen freezes randomly at any given point in time and there's a little bluish tinge that appears on the screen as if you place a bluish transparent sheet on top of the screen. The mouse , keyboard and eveyrthing else freezes as well. The mouse return back for a second and then freezes again, with the only option being hardboot the laptop by presing on the power button for a long time. When I run memtest (the standard memory test program) I do not see any memory errors. However Dell's diagnostic test shows errors (error code 2000-0123) saying memory intergity test failed. DIMM_A ACTUAL blah..blha..blah.. EXPECTING.. blah.. blah. blah..  So I seems to be a memory issue but the same memory stick does not give me errors when I take the other stick out and just let this stick test for errors. Secondly, many times after I force the laptop to reboot by pressing the power button, the laptop won't boot at all. it won't even go to the bios screen. Even multiple attempts to boot it fail. Remove the battery, remove the hard disk, remove the RAM,put the disk in and then reboot.. maybe it will but mostly it does not. It just boots up randomly at any attempt. There's no fixed set of events to happen for it boot up. The above mentioned events of taking stuff out and putting back in is just one of the random ways you can try. I never had this problem since I bought this laptop in Jan 2008. It's only very recently that I've been facing this issue. I even checked the website, downloaded the new bios ie A15 and expected this problem to be fixed, but it  did not. Please share your findings.

Thanks

I have been having the same problem for months. The descriptions here are exactly what I experience. I've been so busy that I don't have time to stay home waiting for Dell. What I have found is that the only way I can run more than 8 minutes is by booting in safe mode with networking. However, running that way I can't save, print, or use sound. Please pass along any solutions you find to fix the problem. Thank you

I have a M1530, but I too am experiencing the same problems.  If I run in anything but Safe Mode, in about 7-10 minutes applications start to freeze.  Unfortunately my computer is 18 months old, so I don't have a warranty to fall back.

Has anything thought about a recent update which may be causing a incompatibility?

Any thoughts?

-Update:

I just rebooted and received a message that my wireless network card was not functioning and everything locked up after that.  When I booted into Safe Mode with Network Support, it worked until decided to try and reboot.  I am concerned with my hardware and don't know whether or not this is a hardware or software issue.  I am thinking my next step will be to baseline the system with a full reformat and new installation of the OS.

Josh,

If the hardware is working correctly in Safe Mode but not when you run in normal Windows mode then it is probably a driver issue.   Before you do a full reinstall (which, honestly, may ultimately be easier / quicker) you may want to go to http://support.Dell.com and try downloading the newer drivers that are available for your model.

Thanks Todd. I will go ahead and do that.

I did perform a full hardware test last night via the pre-boot testing suite, but no faults came up.

I wish I knwe what I did to bring this on.  I installed a couple of programs, but it didn't stat acting up right away.  The network connection started to act kind of funny, but the locking up didn't start to happen until yesterday, now it won't stay on in Normal mode for longer than it takes to load all of the background programs.  Crazy.

I'll do a Safe Boot w/ Network support, hit the web site and download ALL of the drivers and reinstall them.  Hopefully that will work.  Once again thanks for the idea.

Josh,

Honestly, you probably didn't do anything really.   Network connections (especially wireless) can just seem to get "funky" at times and need to be reset.  Sometimes it will cause issues with the driver and everything just needs to be reset.

You may also want to do a disk defrag, which is available under START, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.   Over time Windows will save files wherever it finds room for it on the hard drive and theoretically can split the files up.  Over time that can just cause the system to lag as it searches all over for the files it needs.  The defrag basically grabs those files and reconnects them and saves them together on the drive.    It's usually a good idea to do one every once in a while (and everyone's usage is different so no set time to do it).

Defragging a hard drive can take an extensive amount of time depending on hard drive size, how much data you have, etc.   And historically the Windows defrag tool isn't the most efficient.  You may need to run it a few times to get it to complete the job.  I think there are other versions available online but as always you want to be careful of what you download.  Make sure you trust it before installing / running apps.

Todd,

I agree, the unintended consequences of using the computer will often lead to critical failures in how it functions.  I haven't Defragged the HD in a long time so I will do that as well, but the problem has been a total lockup.  I am going to start with the reinstallation of the drivers and move from there.  This is the most time that the computer has been online since last year before I went to Afghanistan.  (The connectivity there is slow and painfully expenisive.)

UPDATE*****

I spent a few hours last night first; reinstalling the device drivers one at a time and then observing the results, and at the end of all of that, it was still freezing up after about 2-3 minutes after loading all of the background programs.  So I figured I would start to Uninstall some of the recent additions to see if that made a difference.  But two hours later it was doing the same thing.

So I broke down and reinstalled the full OS.  Never having done a reinstall with Vista, I was surprised that it didn't take hours and hours.  Of course I am not finished up reinstalling all of the drivers and getting everything back to factory standard, and I am sure that I have lost access to some things that I would have perfered not to lose, but I'll take it if it means I don't have to purchase a new computer at this time.  I actually like that it automatically backs all of your old data up in the Windows.Old directory.  You can even run some of the programs in there.  But most importantly you can grab all of your data.

The end of the story seems to be positive though.  My system is stable again, and I am going to be a little bit more careful with what I install.  (I think it may have been a Western Digital Backup tool that came with my 1TB jump drive.)
