Dell Backup and Recovery Problem

I just performed a Recovery to factory settings on my Dell Inspiron 15 and when the program restored my system it did not restore my files. I can see the folder it created on my external hard drive but cannot figure out how to get them restored to my laptop. I selected YES to backing up the files. Can anyone help with this problem. I asked Geek Squad and they gave up after about 10 minutes of goofing around.
