Dell Inspiron 1545 - Hard Drive Replacement

The HDD in my sisters Inspiron 1545 Laptop has failed.

I have purchased a brand new WD Scorpio 500GB SATA Hard Drive, and tried to re-install Windows etc.

When I boot the laptop, it says "hard drive not detected; please try to reseat and try again". I have taken the drive out numerous times, and tried to reseat it, but still nothing.

Even through Windows install, it doesn't detect the drive. I read somewhere that I needed to install the AHCI drivers before installing Windows. Even pointing Windows to these drivers, it still doesn't recognise the drive.

When I take the HDD out, and connect it to a SATA/USB disk caddy, my Windows 7 machine picked it up first time.

Any ideas?

Hi Lightingman2003,

To confirm the hardware functionality, I would request you to run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics to check the functionality of the hardware components installed in the system. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action.

You may also refer to this video on how to run the PSA Diagnostics: http://dell.to/1dMViiD

Please check and post the results.

i installed it the same way as the other drive. Here is the drive I have installed:

Should i arrange for the drive to be replaced?

Hi Lightingman2003,

Consider replacing the hard drive. If new hard drive is not detected then the issue is with the motherboard.
