Dell Inspiron E1505 - Screen Turns Black

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. Recently, I've been having a major problem with the laptop. It first happened when I put the laptop in Sleep mode. When I trade awakening it, the screen came on only momentarily and then blacked out. I closed the laptop to put it into sleep mode again, and then turned it back on, and the same thing happened. The computer was continuing to run, but the screen would only display for a moment and then go black.

To solve this problem, I had to shut down the laptop and reboot it. This seemed to work, however whenever I would put the laptop to sleep the same thing would happen.

A few days later, the screen started doing the same thing after completely rebooting as well. The Dell Loading screen would come up for a second, and then the screen would turn black and, although the computer was still operating, nothing on the screen could be seen. I could, again, shut the computer to put it into sleep mode and awakenen it, and the screen would work momentarily (showing the log-in screen after rebooting) but then it would die again. If I did this enough, and played with it enough, I could *eventually* get the screen to stay on and the computer to function properly. Once the screen stayed on for a few minutes, it would continue to stay on and work properly until I shut down the computer or put it to sleep.

This obviously seems to be some sort of problem with the screen or LCD display functioning properly, as the computer seems to be running fine underneathe the screen. Any help on what I can do to fix this problem?? I am afraid that the next time I turn off my computer I wont be able to bring the screen back to life.

Connect an external monitor and see if the problem occurs on that. If the external monitor does not black out then the backlight for the laptop display is probably failing. Backlight replacement will cost $100 ~ $150 from a display repair specialist.

I was gave this exact model laptop that is having the same issues. I have yet to figure out the problem but I do know now that when I hit the f12 key to enter diagnostics the screen works fine. I ran the system test and everything has passed. the monitor has been on for about a hour now while its been doing the system diagnostics. My friend that gave me this laptop told me he had took it to best buy and they told him the graphics adapter was bad. He was just going to toss it in the dumpster. I see now that the adapter is not the problem. I am continuing to run checks on it. I will post back here if I can find the solution.

Ok. So I did all the tests through system diagnosics and everything passed. but still was unable to see the screen after the first couple splash screens during boot up. So I restored the system using the systematic restore program installed on the laptop. Needless to say it now works perfectly fine!  here are the instuctions to run the restore option.\I know that most of you have data that you dont want to loose, I didnt worry about it since it was gave to me.

To use PC Restore:

1 Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.

2 Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press .

If you do not press in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the

computer again.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.

3 On the next screen that appears, click Restore.

4 On the next screen, click Confirm.

The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.

5 When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

6 When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that

appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the

computer was turned on.

7 Click Next.

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

8 After the computer restarts, click OK.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

I repair computers and had a dell inspiron e1505 that would go black when on the internet. After checking all the video connections and trying an external monitor, I checked the memory chips and found that the 2 chips were different clock speed as well as different MHz frequency so I replaced them with a mached set of 1 GB chips and I've had no problems since. Most people don't know that a bad or mismached RAM chip can cause a black screen.  I hope this helps some of you out there.

My Bad about the typos.
