Dell Inspiron N5040 boot issue

Hi, I'm freaking out. My computer will load the dell image screen when I first turn it on, but after it goes to a black screen telling me to "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key". What do I do to fix it? Need to know ASAP please!!!!

Go into the BIOS setup - is the hard drive detected?  F2 at powerup..  If not, the drive has likely failed.  If it is detected, restart, press F12 and run an extended diagnostic on the drive.
