Dell Precision M4800 AMD AutoCAD Graphics Question/Issue

I just purchased a Dell Precision M4800 with AMD graphics and am trying to figure out how to get AutoCAD 2014 applications to recognize the GPU instead of the integrated HD Graphics 4600. AutoCAD 2014 and AutoCAD Map 3D 2014 both default to Intel HD Graphics, saying there is an "uncertified" 3D device. Is the M5100 Mobility Pro a new version of the M5950? Also, 2015 ones show nasty screen cursor error with hardware acceleration enabled, but it seems to be using the AMD GPU. Note that these are free educational licenses, so for all I know they purposefully disable some things with them.

Additionally, when checking for driver updates, it says my GPU driver is up to date, although AMD's website does show a newer version.

Dell just came out with a new BIOS update pretty recently, but I have not figured out what it does or read why they released it. Unless this has changed the only workaround for me was to disable Switchable Graphics in the system BIOS menu, accessed by pressing F2 when the computer is booting up. I have not checked the new BIOS menu but what I last saw was really well organized and logically laid out, so it shouldn't be too hard to find, but if it gives you trouble I could figure out the steps for you.

I have been using my M4800 with Switchable Graphics disabled for quite a while now. There's a small reduction in battery life, probably 20-30% but if you don't need to do anything graphics intensive and want maximum battery life you can always go back into the BIOS menu and turn Switchable Graphics back on. I talked with ProSUpport about this for at least and hour and decided to settle on this solution. Yes, it does not use the IGP but I still get around 4-6 hours of battery life under gentle use (compared to 5-8 hours). That is actual battery life for me, not how much time the computer says is left.

Thanks a lot for your reply,it works. Now my AutoCAD works really well with the M5100 after I enable the hardware acceleration inside AutoCAD.And I have not used my laptop with only balltery for more than 2 hours because I usually work at home or library :)

Thank you again!

Just wondering, are you using 2015 products? I had issues with the 2015 hardware acceleration with the IGP, so for convenience I'm using 2014.

And you're very welcome! It helps to be able to use the hardware you pay for...
