Dell Preecision 7710 upgrade option
Hi all,
I am having Dell Precision 7710 with the following specs:
i7-6820HQ
Nvidia Quadro M3000M
32GB RAM
Non Thunderbolt supported
May I know that is there any upgrade option for the graphic card to Nvidia Quadro M5000M or P4000? Will the differences between the power consumption and the graphic card stand will be compatible to my low graphic card slot?
Can I just purchase another left i/o board with Thunderbolt 3 install in this workstation? Will it be supported or I still need to change the whole motherboard?

Hello WILLIAM 1970,
You will be able to upgrade too M5000M and the slot will be able to supply the power. However, expect shorter battery life due to increased power intake from the M5000M.
In relation to the Thunderbolt port, you will need the I/O board as well as a chassis that has a thunderbolt port cut into the frame.

You'd need to replace the mainboard - there's no other way to have Thunderbolt in this model.

Any additional software or driver need to install in order to use Thunderbolt after installing i/o board?

Hello WILLIAM 1970,
You will need to update the following drivers. Install them in the order listed below,
BIOS: http://dell.to/2r3iZyi
Intel(R) Thunderbolt(TM) Controller Driver: http://dell.to/2qqZDon
Intel(R) Thunderbolt(TM) 3 Firmware Update: http://dell.to/2r3zw5n
Update the latest chipset driver from http://dell.to/2nGSddJ. Reboot your machine into BIOS. Under System configuration look for USB/Thunderbolt Configuration. Ensure the option Enable Thunderbolt Ports is ticked and set Security level to User Authorization.
Save the settings and restart the machine. Thunderbolt should be good after this.

I had tried the steps that you had provided as above after installing i/o board, but when I install Dell Thunderbolt Firmware Update it shows that "Thunderbolt update is not supported. Your system does not contain Thunderbolt."
So how to resolve this problems?

So the replacement is means need to buy a new one or just top up some amount to replace one from Dell?

If you replace the mainboard, you'll lose your warranty - so the only practical way to go about this is to sell the system you have and purchase a new one with the option you want.
Even if you decide to replace the board, figure on $400-500 just for the part (plus labor to have it installed).
