Dell Vostro 2520 1600Mhz memory installed only running at 1333Mhz?

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Vostro 2520 Laptop running windows 8 Enterprise and I have the most current BIOS of A09. I upgraded the memory to 8GB of DDR3 PC3-12800 which should run at 1600Mhz. However when I look in task manager under performance for the memory it shows the speed running at only 1333Mhz. I double check the dell owners manual to see if PC3-12800 is compatible with my laptop before I upgraded and it is. If you go to crucial memory upgrade for the Vostro 2520 it says it can use PC3-12800 or PC3-14900. In fact the original RAM was PC3-12800. But I never looked at what speed it was running at.

Why is this happening?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It will depend on the CPU you have installed - the memory controller is part of the CPU.  If you have an i5 or i3 CPU, the max memory speed is 1333 MHz.

Thank you that explains it. I have an i3. I am a tad bit upset becuase had I known that I could have saved myself $15. I am not even sure if the Dell Vostro 2520 even had an option for an i7 cpu. So I don't understand why they would have PC3-12800 in the owners manual it should be PC3-10600. Thats Substitute character removed as per TOU>.
