Dell XPS 12 Loud Fan Noise & Page Scrolling Problems

Hi, I recently bought the XPS 12 from Dell less than a week ago. However, ever since I bought it, I noticed that the fan gets very noisy. I bought this laptop for school use. However, the fan gets so loud that I cannot even use it in school. Also, I am having problems with the touch pad scrolling. Whenever I'm scrolling down, sometimes the page will suddenly scroll to the top. Please help, the two problems are starting to bother me a lot.

I am experiencing the same problems with my fans. Most of the time it is running at full speed even when I am doing simple tasks. Haven't noticed such a noisy laptop since my low budget laptop from 2003. Tried to upgrade the drivers, but it didn't work.

One day the fan kept running for 15 minuttes after I turned it of even though it wasn't connected to a power source. Had to turn it on and off again to stop the fan.

I don't know if this is normal, but in the Task Manager it shows that the Boot configuration data editor is running at about 40% CPU? I am not an expert, but it sound like a lot, but don't know if that is what is causing the problem

Seriously considering going back to Mac even though some work tasks would be easier with Windows. My 2.5 year old Macbook Pro was an overall better user experience; it ran quiter, smoother and even came back from sleep faster with an old mechanical hard drive. I appriciate the build quality and touch screen on the XPS 12, but for every day use I can not recommend it. Simply too many bugs that take away focus from what I really need it for, which is getting work done.

Geden,

Thanks for your reply. It pains me to see a customer reply to a help post before a Dell specialist does.

I have tried to use the 24/7 chat and they didn't even try to help.

The Dell representative just told me to use a different chat which I was not able to get to work.

Both Dell's customer as well as support service are horrible.

Although the XPS 12 is an overall well-designed laptop, I bought it for school use.

However, the fan turns on even when I'm not doing basic note taking on my word processors.

This would not be much of a bother if I was doing this at home or a private environment; however, it is really annoying when using it in class.

Not only is the sound itself annoying, but it is a bother for students around me.

I also am considering buying a different laptop.

I really hope that Dell both fixes this problem as well as improve their customer and support services.

Best regards,

Jay

I have both of these exact same problems. The fan comes on in the middle of class when I am not even touching the computer and only OneNote is running. It's embarrassing and I usually just turn the computer off to stop it and not distract the students around me.

The scrolling is also a problem. Why on earth was the scrolling designed to jump in the opposite direction? Sometimes I will scroll and it will work as normal, other times I try scrolling down, and then when I lift my fingers it jumps to the top of the page. Rather frustrating.

I can't speak to the fan problems, but I've been wrestling with the scrolling problems for several days.   I got the latest BIOS, and the latest Touchpad drivers with no change.

Try this: Go to Control Panel, Mouse, and the Dell Touchpad tab.  Click "Click to change Dell Touchpad Settings.  On the Sensitivity tab move the slider for "Touch Pressure" all the way to the left.

That worked for me.  I don't know if that works with older drivers so it's best to update just in case.

Hi Jay

I actually wrote Dell customer support about the problem before posting here. So far I have't heard from them. Can't really live with the noise as it is disturbing to people that I am working with, so think I am going to get another laptop. Battery time isn't impressive either, which is a bit of a problem, as I am on the road a lot. The power brick on the Continental European model has three pins (or whatever you call the things you put into the plug), which means that I can't charge it most places, where the electrical plugs only use two pin plugs. That means that the laptop isn't really very portable.

thanks a lot this helped! a friend of mine, who also bought the 2nd edition xps 12, had this problem too, after opening the dell touchpad configuration. he claims that this even persisted after reinstalling windows.
