Dell XPS 13 (2015) erratic touchpad behavior

I have a brand new Dell XPS 13 (2015) and am frustrated by the erratic behavior of the trackpad. I attempt to scroll over to click on a button, release my finger from the trackpad so as to click, and the cursor jumps. Often it jumps so far as to no longer be on the button. It is borderline unusable. This behavior doesn't occur on any of my other computers including a dell precision bought last year. I have been unable to find updated drivers, or any advanced settings (beyond "pointer speed"). Anyone have any suggestions? If not, I'm going to have to ship this back.

Dan530,

I also have an XPS 13, 2015 (model 9343, i7, touch, 3500pixel) with the same problem, plus poor palm rejection.  I contacted technical support, and they came to the conclusion that they should repair mine, so I mailed it back yesterday as a warranty fix.

I'm skeptical that it's a hardware problem, believing instead that some driver tuning is in order.  Will let you know if the hardware swap works out for me, in about 2-3 weeks when I get the laptop back.

That linked thread now contains a link to a firmware update that fixes thee jumpy touchpad. There are a few lingering issues with the touchpad, but it's a lot better.

Sorry about the delay in response.
Please check the touchpad functionality on all applications and let us know the outcome.

Hello Raghav

Could you please help me. I have just received my brand new XPS i5 8 ram 1080p non touch.

the cursor often shakes and at least 4 times now it freezes completely, only to be brought back to life or make the machine react by ctrl alt del or turning it off and back on... I think the 2 finger gestures make it worst and more frequent..

The mouse pad also has this rattle that I'm not sure is supposed to be normal or not... If there's no easy fix (drivers? the reassurance that the good people at DELL are working on it) I rather just return it and move on, as I am about to go for a long trip abroad and cant be waiting for the laptop to get back on time.

Thank you,

Hi jjfremen,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS and touchpad drivers on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below and click on ‘Get drivers and downloads’ then download the BIOS from BIOS section and touchpad driver from ‘Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices’ section onto the system and install it.

Also, I would advise you to download and install the ‘TouchFreeze’ software from the link below and check for issue resolution.

Please let me know if this helps.

Thank you Ravi, I did try to get the files from the link but it went like this:

So I guess I will be trying again tomorrow.

It has to the point that it is not recovering from the freezes anymore.

For now will be fine, plugged an old mouse that was laying around the house.

Will let you know how it goes.

This improved the situation but the mouse pad is still erratic. This is amazingly annoying. I find out from reading here that Dell have had this problem for years!  Yet they come out with only half assed solutions. I have just bought this XPS. I love it, except for the mouse which makes the computer virtually unusable. I don't want to spend $1000 on a laptop and have to buy an external mouse for it to work correctly.  My question is should I pray that Dell eventually do the right thing and commit resources to solve this problem once and for all, or do I turn it in and buy a Lenovo? I only have a week left of my trial period from Microsoft where I bought the thing.

OMG. YES! I am having the same problem with my XPS too. Just bought the thing in August. The top rated laptop on the market so this is surprising. Furthermore, my laptop has given me the blue screen of death a few times (I think it's connected to the cursor issue.) I use it for business and it's becoming unusable... so frustrating...

I bought my XPS13 new (with 8.1) in the USA in mid October 2015  and immediately loaded Windows 10 off the web connection from Microsoft.  The principal and three week persisting touchpad problem is similar or the same as the above writer mentions.

I too tried all the permitted adjustments at several permutations without success and loaded a 'flashed in' different touchpad driver with USA Dell help. This one:-

http colon slash slashwww.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=T792T

I had to change the entry to stop it being blanked out on this reply form !

Today by accident in looking for a better solution and seeing I wasn't the only one in trouble, I suddenly found eight driver updates which Dell notices hadn't informed me of. The touchpad is certainly better but still jumps unexpectedly. I really wish it was as good, predictable & reliable as my 11 year old Dell Inspiron's touchpad  which lead me to trust Dell would sort it out.

I remain to be convinced as so many folk appear to experience similar anguish and cannot detune the beast. In fact I'd be quite happy just to replicate the simple actions the 2004 Dell pad performance grants.

So come on Dell please tell us how to desensitise and control the pad.
