Dell XPS 17 3D cannot view 3D Blu Rays

I'm sure others have this problem.  I got a new Dell XPS 17 3D ready laptop (running Windows 7 64-bit) like a month ago. Worked flawlessly.  Could play Company of Heroes in 3D, view 3D pictures I shot with my Fuji W3 3D point and shoot camera, and could watch my copy of Despicable Me in 3D on Blu Ray. Yesterday I was babysitting my nephew and popped in Despicable Me to distract him and could only hear audio.  Screen was black, no video.

This was what I updated:

1. Nvidia driver is now 275.33.

2. Cyberlink Powerdvd is now 9.6 instead of preloaded 9.5 version.

The infrared receiver works fine. I can still play Company of Heroes and view pictures (MPO files) taken by my Fuji camera in 3D just fine.  Powerdvd 9.6 can play dvd's and blu rays just fine. HOWEVER, pop in a 3D Blu Ray and I can't get video, just a black screen with audio.

So if I can play a game and view pictures in 3D but not watch a movie, my money's on the movie player for being the faulty component.  I sent an email to Cyberlink explaining my problem. What I got was a half ass answer trying to place blame on Dell. They said I was using "a customized OEM version of PowerDVD from Dell. You have received a special customized version of the Cyberlink software that was shipped with Dell products only, and thus we do not have much information on the features and internal architecture of the software. Contact Dell for further assistance."

GREAT. I get to be on the phone for hours with some dude in India who will eventually place the blame back on Cyberlink.

Anyone find a solution?  Anyone pony up and buy Powerdvd 11 Ultra for $90? Did that solve the issue?

By the way, I opted for the preloaded NVidia GeForce GT 555M graphics card in my laptop build. My 3D infrared receiver is built into the laptop, just above the power button when laptop is flipped open. It lights up green when I attempt to watch a 3D Blu Ray, but again, screen is black but I can hear the audio.

I had the same issue as you after I updated the Nvidia graphics driver. So I opted to upgrade to PowerDVD 11 Ultimate and hey presto the Blu-ray playback

was solved.I didn't try roll back to Dell's drivers,so it might be worth a try. Also there was a powerdvd 9.6 update a while back, this may have also caused some of the black screen issue. Not like they were trying to force anyone to upgrade to Pdvd 11 or anything *cough,cough:emotion-5:

That's a bit unlucky man!Sorry to hear that..I didn't really put much effort into getting mine fixed thru tinkering with the settings(just being lazy) and just opted to upgrade PowerDvd.But I'm sure it could have been sorted with a bit of effort.

It's a pitty you didn't have your stuff backed up in the clouds.

Just remember if you are going to update your drivers again, that you could be facing the same issue again.

I have a new Dell XPS 17 laptop 3D and have had some of the same probems as fortunenooky.  I was given yberlink power dvd 9.6.  I have tried 3 bluray 3D movies and they are not in 3D.  I have gotten the run around from both dell and Cyberlink.  They say I am configured correctly and d the hardware is okay but it is a software issue.  No one is taking responsibility or resoving my problem.  bazzz3, do you think upgtrading to Pdvd would solve? Thanks for any thoughts from the forum.

I can't give you any guarantee that this will solve your issue, but with my problem it worked.Maybe you could tell us a bit more about your laptop status. Is your 3D working for everything else .ie games, nvidia control panel 3D test, media files. What driver are you using currently for your video card.Have you tinkered with powerdvd settings?Respond and we'll see if we can sort it for you.

bazzz3. I am using a GE Force GT 555M video card with a driver version 8.17.12.6594 dated 11/29/10,  In another place it says driver version 265.94.  On all 3D tests the 3D works very well in steroscopic 3D.  It's just when a 3D bluray is put in that it looks like 2D.  You don't need the glasses and it is really not 3D.  I didn't tinker with power dvd but both Dell and Cyberlink took control of my computer to check things.  Here is a copy of the last note I got from cyberlink.

Sorry for more questions, but are you just getting a blank screen when you launch a 3D Blu-ray and is the 3D emitter light on?My current nvidia driver is 275.33/driver version 8.17.12.7533 and I had been running PowerDvD 9.6 with it causing the blank screen. Then I upgraded to PowerDvD 11 ultra and everything worked again.

The thing is I'm really not sure when the problem started for me,I don't really watch too many 3D Blu-rays.But I do know it worked before I installed the current Nvidia driver and the last Cyberlink Patch for 9.6.Maybe if you have the software license and disk you could try uninstall Powerdvd 9.6 and reinstall(but make sure you have the serial key for your copy).

If you can try not install any PowerDVD patches and lets see if that works for you.

Even with the Update to Cyberlin PowerDVD11 I receive an black screen (running the latest NVIVIA Driver) with my Piranha 3D-BluRay. All the other files/DVDs via PowerDVD11 will be transcoded in 3D in realtime.

What's the matter?

Hi Bazz,

Its nice to hear that atleast its working for you now.

I am having a similar problem. Could you be able to help me on it please.

1. Its a 17XPS 3D with 550M NVidia Graphics card.

2. I bought a PowerDVD Ultra 11 but still the Bluray and DVD 3Ds are not working.

3. Surprisingly, all the NVideo 3D videos available on their website and  other half SBS 3D movies are working fine.

Could you be able to help me on it. Thanks.

Hello Rathish,

Could you tell me some more about your issue .eg. is your screen going black when trying to play 3D Blu-Rays,what nVidia driver are you using and what Bios is your system running. Is the green 3D emitter light coming on and what movies are you trying to play.We need to try eliminate these first.

Hi Bazz,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Please find details below:

1. I can see the 3D movie on the screen (when put on 3D fullscreen) but is not good (still blurred like when seeing without glasses). Surprisingly, the subtitles which are displayed blurred in non-3D, are showing correctly when put in 3D fullscreen mode.

2. The NVidia driver is 268.30 with NVidia GeForce 550M graphics card with 1GB.

3. Yes, the 3D emitter is on and I can see the green light. My NVidia vision glasses also starts up at the same time.

4. I am trying to play a 3D DVD movie 'The Polar Express'.

5. I am using a Cyberlink PowerDVD 11.0 Ultra.

6. Whenever I play ANY 3D SBS files, I can experience the 3D movie and everything works good. But when I play DVD, it just doesnt work.

I hope I can give you some hint here. Thanks for your effort.

Regards,

Rathish

Hi again Rathish,

I'm not sure what's going on with your playback. It's a different issue than mine.I would suggest that you update the bios of the pc first, then update the nvidia drivers to the latest revision(there have been many 3D playback improvements). If none of that works I think you could try reinstall PowerDvd as long as u have the product key for it.

Also before you do any of that, make sure your playback issue is the same with other 3D Blu-Rays,I've heard that there are problems with some 3D BRys.And double check your powerdvd 3D settings eg Blu-Ray 3d playback, screen type,Auto 3D format and so on.Try these things and let me know how you get on.If they don't work,we'll keep trying.Goodluck.
