Dell XPS 17 L-701X and USB 3.0 Ports

Okay, dumb question, but I just am not sure how to tell. Which ports are USB 3.0 ports on this machine? There are three USB ports, two on the back left and one on the left side. Are all of these 3.0? Just some?

Thanks!

Hi tvr2500m,

Dell XPS L701X has only two USB 3.0 connectors located in the rear left of the chassis. One USB 2.0 connector in the left and one eSATA/USB combo connector with USB PowerShare in the right.

Thanks, Ravi. I bought a USB 3.0 external drive enclosure. It doesn't work when plugged into the two USB 3.0 ports, only when plugged into the USB 2.0 port. I haven't tried it in the eSATA/USB combo port. Maybe this i where I should be plugging in? I would like to have more speed than the USB 2.0 port.

What's the USB specification of the eSATA/USB combo port? I just plugged in the external eSATA drive USB 3.0 enclosure into this port. It's recognized. That's good, I suppose. Haven't tried to do anything else with it.

Hi tvr2500m,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS and chipset drivers using the links below.

BIOS                  : http://dell.to/18MoDUX

Chipset              : http://dell.to/1e5ZtT7

Chipset 1            : http://dell.to/1gmU5Nz

USB 3.0              : http://dell.to/1hz94BR

Also, I would like you to check if any other devices are working on the USB 3.0 ports. the eSATA/USB combo port are USB 2.0 complaint.

Hi, Ravi:

Thanks for this. I had installed two of the four. I thought I'd installed them all. I had long ago updated the BIOS. I installed the USB 3.0 and Chipset 1 updates.

How does the eSATA/USB port work? Is that the best port to plug in an external SATA drive? And what is the USB spec on this port? Is it 3.0?

The USB 3.0 external drive enclosure with the drive fitted still doesn't show up as an available drive under Computer when plugged into either of the two left rear USB 3.0 ports. ??

Hi tvr2500m,

Please follow the steps below to run the test on USB ports on the system.

1.       Open the link http://dell.to/14YjKb2

2.       Select ‘Hardware’ under ‘Choose a Diagnostic Type’.

3.       Select ‘USB’.

4.       Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.

5.       Let me know if the results.

Also, I would like you to check if any other devices are working on the USB 3.0 ports. The eSATA/USB combo ports are USB 2.0 complaint.

I wasn't able to run the tests from the Web, but do have the latest Dell Diagnostics application. The USB test passed. ??

Hi tvr2500m,

I would suggest you to reinstall the BIOS and all the chipset drivers again in sequence as the drivers may have not installed properly.

Also, I would like you to check if any other devices are working on the USB 3.0 ports

Can do. Can the chipset drivers just be reinstalled again. Don't have to uininstall them?

And how do you reflash the BIOS with the same BIOS version. I've tried this, but got the message that the BIOS version is current and couldn't continue. ??

Hi tvr2500m,

Please try updating the BIOS again and you can update the chipset drivers on the system without uninstalling it.

I'm BAAAAACK. I just looked at my system info and saw the Microsoft is controlling the two USB 3.0 ports and they are operating as USB 2.0 ports. How to fix this to get them to operate as USB 3.0 ports? I've upgraded my XPS 17 L701X to Windows 8.1.

Thanks!!

My USB 3.0 ports are not working when i plugged in them USB 2.0 flash drive. i have  not checked any 3.0 device yet in them . but it is not showing any window on plugging in 2.0 flash drive. Plus i have checked all the drivers of USB through device manger . and it shows that every driver is installed.
Kindly help me in resolving this issue
