Dell XPS L501X - Two Beeps Then Prompted for Choice of F1 F2 F12 When Powering On Laptop

Dell XPS L501X - Two Beeps Then Prompted for Choice of F1 F2 F12 When Powering On Laptop

Is this a BIOS issue needing a revision or a CMOS coin-battery going bad? Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Current L501X_A08.exe BIOS has been installed for several months, (unable to reinstall with /forceit switch, does not work with this update as with older BIOS updates on older laptops).

Set system defaults in BIOS and restarted without success.

No new hardware or software has been installed for quite some time.

No external USB devices other than mouse (that has been tested connected and disconnected).

Ran Dell Diagnostics from F12 menu and within Windows 7 with the Dell Support software both with no errors.

Reseated Samsung 4Gb memory cards (first with both and then powered on with each individually), worked two times as expected with both installed then back to F1 F2 F12 prompt  when powering on laptop. The two beeps sound like they are produced by a halt and not the usual memory related beep error code.

Your battery has died an untimely death resulting in the error out choices of F1, F2 or F12 when powering on laptop. Replacing the battery and disabling the battery charging via the Dell Battery Meter in Power Options while it's on the AC adapter seems to prolong the life of the battery. I went with the standard battery since the long life ones cost too much to keep replacing. You may want to find an after market battery maker as well.

Dell_Harish_R:

Please refer to the subject of the original post for the error message you're requesting.

This is in fact a battery issue, when the battery was replaced the issue was completely resolved. The related symptom was the battery would not fully charge and also displayed a not charging notification in the system tray when charged to only 91%

I'm more than a little upset that the battery I purchased with the laptop from Dell only lasted 11 months with normal use and is not covered by the warranty issued with the computer...especially since it led me to believe there was a system board issue as a result.

Therefore, I highly recommend to anyone else having this issue that they purchase a third party after market battery replacement for about half the price that Dell offers them for online.
