Does Inspiron 1520 has windows 7 drivers? Please help me!

Hi to cut my story short, I performed clean install on my inspiron 1520 and installed windows 7 home premium(previously windows vista home premium). I previously upgraded it and its totally abomination.(lag as hell) Anyway, I installed my old drivers and the most of the time the CPU usage is around 70-100% when opening any programs. And its still lag. I visited and asked a lot of forums and there's one thing that strikes me. Is it because of my 'windows vista' drivers that do not support windows 7? I performed windows 7 upgrade advisor and my comp is compatible with windows 7.(except for itunes XD) I have been trying to solve this for the last 5 days and still nothing. When will the dell inspiron 1520 fully compatible with windows 7? And is there any windows 7 drivers for inspiron 1520? Thanks in advance.

I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit on my computer. I Have’nt had any problems by now, the only thing was it didn’t recognise 2 drivers but the solution was to install the Vista 64-bit drivers. Windows 7 recognises all 32-bit drivers without a problem, and as far as I know, you don’t have to install extra drivers. Was the programs working normally before you have installed the drivers?

Hi, you should read my post about upgrading the Inspiron 1420.  I think the 1520 uses the same hardware except for the screen size (14" vs. 15").  I noticed that our machines have the same video card as well.  I suggest reinstalling the OS with the custom installation option and using the drivers that I used.

Win7 runs better than Vista on my machine.  However, I upgraded from Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 2gb RAM to Win 7 64-bit Home Premium with 4gb.

I also  have just installed Windows 7 on my 1520 and had a few problems with drivers but managed to overcome most of them by using a combination of using the Dell supplied drivers or going to the manufacturers websites. I am using the 64 bit version of the OS which did make finding drivers that little more tricky. I am very pleased with the upgrade and the system is working better than when I had Vista installed. My Windows experience base score improved slightly and it appears that my score for gaming has left me with a big smile on my face (5.9). From the information you have posted there appears to be  things that might be affecting your laptop performance.

1) Your BIOS (laptop firmware) is out of date and needs to be urgently updated

2) You will only be able to use 3 1/2 gigs of your 4 gig memory whch is placing more stress on your CPU as you are using a 32 bit operating system

3) The VGA drivers are outdated

Basically for the graphics I downloaded the most up to date drivers fron the NVida website (www.nvidia.com). There are a few problems in Areo occassionally not loading the desktop manager but my Windows experience score has increased dramaticaly with the new drivers from NVidia. Just select your graphics card (Geforce 8M Series Notebook) from the pull down menu and select your operating system and download. The latest versions for Windows 7 are 195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_international_whql  and   for32 bit (x86) OS  "195.62_notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql"  They appear to be reliable.

The other problem I experienced was with the Intel Wifi. The windows drivers that the Operating System installed do not work.  I believe I overcame this problem simply by installing new drivers from Intel. The windows drivers now posted on the Dell Support Site also  resolved most of the other problem. For the touchpad go to the Synaptics website (www.synaptics.com) and look for the link that says support for windows 7 and down load these drivers. They appear to work but I did have Areo problems after. I was only able to resolve the areo problem after updating the drivers by going into msconfig and selecting normal boot restarting the laptop and then going back into msconfig  to shut down unwanted startup processes.

Your problems do sound most likley to be from the graphics drivers and chipset drivers. The drivers available for the Intel chipset  on the Dell website have worked for me and my system worked better after my OS upgrade. I would advise using them rather than the one installed during your  Windows 7 installation. From reading your specs it would appear that you are using a 32 bit OS and essentially this limits you from using all of the 4gig of memory that you have installed. You can try purchasing a 2 or 4gig SanDisk Ultra II SD card to configure the windows ReadyBoost facility which works under Windows 7 but did not work well under Vista. Most importantly you should update your system's BIOS by downloading the latest BIOS file from the Dell Support website as from your system spec information this is not up to date. Do this first before updating your other drivers then install the software and drivers in the following order from the Dell Support site: These  will be listed as Vista drivers but will work with Windows 7

1) Download and Install the 2 Dell Utility updates (Power management and Dell Notebook Software)

2) Download and up date the Intel chipset drivers,

3) Download and update the Card reader driver (Ricoh -Driver R5C833) also available from the Dell Support website.

 4) Install the Windows 7 Video drivers from NVidia and then the touchpad drivers from Synaptics

5) Download and install the Intel Wifi drivers either the Windows 7 drivers from the Intel Support website or the Dell Vista Drivers from the Dell Website (if you are having problems with wifi connectivity) NB When you run Windows update it will ask you to update these drivers again. Do not select this option at this stage as it will only reinstall the drivers that the Windows installation disk supplies and you will again have no connectivity

Finally try shutting down some unneccesary programs that run when you boot  by using the msconfig tool (start>in search box type "msconfig"> click on the startup tab and unclick any programs that you don't use often ot that are non essential. Retart the computer and see if it runs better with less applications running in the background . Your computer should run more smoothly after this,

Hope this helps

We have the identical system. I just upgraded but installed the 32 bit Professional. Because I went from Vista Premium to Professional, I had to do a clean install. After reading your post I kind of wish I had installed the 64 bit but --- I didn't. I don't have much software that is 64 bit anyway.  Perhaps on the next round as I don't think I can go from 32 bit to 64 bit without reinstalling everything.

The only 2 snags I had was that MS did not install the correct video driver. I subsequently went to NVidia and got the driver and I had to install the Ricoh drivers. I think everything else is fine except I'm not loving the audio. I had installed the Creative Audigy MB software which enhanced the sound on Vista but I can't seem to get it installed on Windows 7. It is asking for "drivers".  I'm assuming that means the Dell Audio drivers which are for Vista. Any suggestions? Should I try installing the Vista Audio drivers?

Other than that, the laptop is running fine. There seem to be 2 video scores - on the gaming graphics, my index score is a 5.9 but the aero graphics score is only a 4.6. All my other index scores are mid 5.

Any tweak suggestions are appreciated.

I just purchased the Vostro 1720 with the nvidai graphics card. Initially it had Windows 7 home 32 bit installed and now I've just installed 64-bit ultimate Windows 7. However some of the advanced graphic features have stopped working, e.g. the list of broswer windows shows as a vertical list rather than a preview of each. I can't use the windows key / tab to go through the windows. The monitor says it's a generic monitor with a driver date from 2006, is that the problem?

Thanks

I found an updated driver on Nvidia and downloaded that and now at least the generic monitor references that. In addition I ran the troubleshooting tasks on Aero and now I finally have that feature working. I still have a Mass Storage Controller issue tthat has no driver, not sure how to resolve that one yet. I also don't see any device that references the inbuilt webcam, please let me know if that should show in the list and if so any ideas on how to add it.
Thanks

The mass storage issue was the SD card and I found a driver for this. The webcam issue was that I didn't have Windows Media Player, apparently that's what the 'N' refers to in Windows Ultimate 7 N. I am also now able to run the performance benchmark which was failing due to no media player, score was 5.9. Everything looks good now.
