Dual Boot Ubuntu on XPS 14 (L421x)

Hi,

I've just received a new XPS 14 (L421x) running Windows 8 with:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3427U CPU @ 1.80GHz
  • WDC WD5000LPVX-
  • SAMSUNG SSD PM8

I want to dual boot Ubuntu but i cannot get the system to recognise my USB drive with the Ubuntu ISO on it when I enter Boot Options at start up.

I have dual booted Ubuntu on all my computers but I've never come across the UEFI(?) set up so I'm at a loss at how to set things up for it.

Could someone please help me with an idiots guide on the correct settings in the Bios and the procedure for running Ubuntu alongside Windows 8.

As a side note, I also created my recovery media on a USB stick, so I'm also worried that should I ever need to fully recover my system, I wouldn't be able to boot from the USB.

Please help!

I have seen several tutorials.

me too, but none that deal successfully with an xps with rapid start (unrecognised partitions within ubuntu installer etc) but thanks for the great answer
