Error: This computer does not support this operating system

Question

I'm getting the error message 'This computer does not support this operating system' when I install the  'Mobile Pentium 4 Processor Driver' from the support site or from the driver CD.    Inspirion 5160, just had the systemboard replaced for an unrelated USB issue, this error occured prior to motherboard replacement also.   I've done a fresh install and all the other drivers and application installed ok.   Any idea what's going on? Do the drivers have to be installed in a certain order?   tia

XP has the drivers built in so usually you won't need them.

Thanks for the info. I'm aware there is some built in drivers but this is an update to the XP drivers.Its the improvement in reliability that is pushing me to get this installed.   From the downloads section from the 5160: Description:  This is a driver for the Intel Mobile Pentium 4 microprocessor in the Dell Inspiron 5160 computer system. This driver improves power management performance over the driver that is naitive to Microsoft Windows XP.   Urgent:  Dell highly recommends applying this update as soon as possible. The update contains changes to improve the reliability and availability of your Dell system.

I understand that, I didn't install it on my 5160 and it works fine.

If you want to install it, do it right after the chipset driver.

With XP SP2 the Dell driver really isn't needed as it is built into the OS anyway.

Just like you, I run without it and all is well in that regard. Now, if only I could find Dell drivers that don't cause all these DCOM errors..........

I dunno I don't get those.

Are you on a Wireless network or Hardwired, or Dialup.

I recently purchased an Inspiron 8600 with WinXP Home.  I had a copy of WinXP Pro that I used to do a clean install (format, partition, install, etc.).   After doing that, I went to Dell's website and downloaded all the drivers.  I had no problem with any of them, except for one:  the 'System and Config Utilities', which included a USB driver.  This one would not install, no matter what I did.  I got the same error you are:  'This computer does not support this operating system'.   After about 15 emails, 5 calls, and about 3 hours on the phone with clueless Dell Support people, I finally got one who apparantly knew what she was talking about.   She claimed that the problem was happening because it was not a Dell OEM version of Windows XP Pro.  She sent me a Dell version, which I installed, and all the drivers then installed with no problems.   I'm not sure why it makes a difference where the WinXP Pro comes from, but it seems to have solved my problem.   I don't know if this will relate to you in any way, but that's my story.

It makes the difference because it's a Dell LT and the drivers etc from the Dell website are looking for the Dell Vers of XP.
