The hard drive has failed, right now you can boot up but utilities that scan the drive are more likely to struggle hence the freeze.
With that error message its only time until it completely fails so you are best to replace the HDD with a SSD which will give you a significant performance boost. The 240 GB BX200 and 480 GB BX200 are quite a good buy:

Glad you found the problem with the computer, hopefully you're able to find a new hard drive and fix it real soon.
