External monitor problem with Dell 1730

Hi everyone. I have a problem trying to connect an external monitor with my Dell 1730.

The monitor is a Samsung SM 2032MW, I have connected a DVI-D cable to the left of the notebook and then with the monitor. Then I push Fn+F8 to switch, but nothing happens.

Only appears a square with 3 options (a laptop, a laptop+monitor and a monitor ) but I can't select anything. And even if by default it is setted in the picture with a laptop and a monitor, I can't see anything on it.

And only if I open Nvidia control panel I can see that this monitor is seen in the sli options or in the external screen options, but even if I select it nothing happens...

What can I do?

try updating to the latest driver first.

desktop monitor in my experience auto detect inputs straight away because they are plug and play. try starting with the laptop with the cable inserted. make sure the resolution isn't set too high.
