Film protector
What is the purpose of the thin film sheet between the keys on a new Inspiron 5040? What is it protecting? Do I need to keep it?
Thanks, John

Hi Wjohng,
Welcome to Dell community,
Laptop Keyboard Covers are engineered on the keyboard. This prevents permanent damage, screen marks & scuffs created from keyboard, track pad, & TrackPoint contact. They are also engineered to clean, polish, and restore the screen, chassis and various surfaces of your laptop.
Would it be possible to upload the picture of the keyboard so that we can check and let you know?
This is how your keyboard should be looking:
Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks Ravi M,
I have a keyboard cover that goes on top of the keys. What I'm talking about came with the computer - it's a thin plastic that fits between the keys and has holes for the keys, it easily lifts off.

Hi,
Thank you for the information.
Yes, this is just the normal film which can be removed. Also, this is just there for it to look new when you remove it after some time. So, you can keep it now and remove it later on, it’s up to you. Your keyboard itself is water proof.
Glad to be of assistance.
Thanks & Regards

Hi wjohng,
I apologize for the above comment, I should have checked before posting that.
Well, they say that this system’s keyboard is spillage proof I still need to get clarity on this, I checked it and couldn’t find anywhere that this is waterproof, so I apologize for the comment I made above. I will check and get back to you. Let me find some more information about the product.
Glad to be of assistance.
Thanks & Regards

Hiwjohng,
I am sorry for the delayed response, I have checked all my resources and I could not find the article mentioning the same. I apologize for the previous response where I mentioned that the keyboard is spillage proof. Please take care while drinking wine while working on it.
Thanks. Glad to be of assistance.
Thanks & Regards
