Help with hard drive data recovery / repalcement (Inspiron 6400)

Hi

I am trying to help my uncle who has blue screen error with registry hive (error code C0000218). Can someone pl help with following queries:

1- We called dell and were told that only option is to replace hard drive. When i googled this, i found it may be possible to recover the system through XP boot CD and restore the hard drive. is it sure that the hard drive is gone?

2- I am looking to transfer the hard drive data to new computer using a USB caddy, but not sure what exact spec is the hard drive. i was told its SATA? Do i need any more details of the drive or can i order one of the following to help recover the data:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-SATA-USB-HARD-DRIVE-CADDY-HDD-ENCLOSURE-CASE-/290525098225?pt=UK_Collectables_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item43a4a530f1

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-SATA-USB-2-0-HDD-Hard-Drive-Disk-Enclosure-Case-/370486617212?pt=UK_Collectables_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item5642b9247c

3- if i were to order a repalcement hard drive can someone please point me to spec of the hard drive that i need or is it just 2.5" SATA specification enough? I asked DEll to give me exact speci but they refused as it is out of warranty now.

Thanks

X

It's very likely (near 100% probability) the drive is bad.

Yes, you can mount it into an external case and see what's still readable.  Yes, you need a 2.5" SATA enclosure.  Those cases will work.

Any 2.5" 9.5 mm or slimmer, SATA notebook drive can be used as a replacement.

Thanks for your reply.

Just couple of things:

1- If i order a new replacement drive, is it SATA or SATA II?

i.e. which one of the following shall i order?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/160GB-2-5-SATA-Laptop-Hard-Drive-Dell-Inspiron-6400-/280665341885?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item4158f53fbd

2- There is a possibility that Windows XP has limitation on max hard drive capacity. What is the limit and what happens if i get a bigger capacity drive? is it just that i cant use the additional capacity or it just wont work?

thanks

Any SATA notebook drive that's 2.5 mm and 9.5 mm or slimmer will work.  This model doesn't have a BIOS limitation - the limit is 750G, which is the highest capacity you can get in a 9.5 mm drive (the larger ones are 12.5 mm and won't fit).

I would seriously reconsider buying a drive on EBay.  You may run into warranty issues if the drive fails and needs replacement.
