How much ram can I upgrade to in my Vostro 1000?

I have a Dell Vostro 1000;

Windows XP PRO Service Pack 3 1.90 GIG AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core TK-57

512 Memory Cache

64 bit ready   (what does that mean? Can I upgrade to 64?)

2 slots   DIMM A has 1024   DIMM B has 1024

Can I upgrade at least to 2GB in each slot = 4GB ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i have had the same issue under Win7 (flickering screen) , it's because of wrong drivers. You have to download vista drivers from dell site. If you are running an x64 OS , in download folder will also be a folder BIN64. Run setup.exe.

Do you have any tips about the screen going black.  My laptop stalls somtimes with a black screen when trying to open a browser window.  Using Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and IE 8. I also get an error when I try to copy a prntscrn to the paint brush.  I just get a black pasted square for my screenshot.  Please let me know anything that might have been help ful in your driver upgrade process.  THank you,

Is it a Dell Vostro 1000 ? AMD or Intel Based chipset ?

Did you flash BIOS to latest version ? There was an issue with AMD Based laptops with flickering screen, driver error etc.

In my case (with amd) BIOS update helped.

Also, are you sure you run a legit OS ? ))

I have recently upgraded my Vostro 1000 (AMD Turion X2 TL-60, Windows 7 64bit) from 2 GB to 8 GB RAM without any problems. BIOS (version 2.6.3) and OS both recognize all of the 8 GB. Due to the X1150 Radeon chip using shared memory, Windows reports that 7.87 GB are usable.

Note, however, that the modules used must be PC2-5300 ones (667 MHz clock speed). 800 MHz modules are said not to work.

My vostro 1000 is dead unfortunately :( . . . I just wont power on . It's a known hardware issue. I guess it's related to the fact that MB chip and AC controller are close to each other , and  also they both are located unde the wifi module which is continously overheating. X1150 also "warms up" pretty fast, which is the main problem of system overheating.

Hi imducky1,

I upgraded my Vostro1000 a few months ago. Curently I am running Win7 Home Premium 64bit SP1, 8GB ram (2x 4GB) & upgraded my processor to AMD TL68. I now have lightening fast machine which gives my girlfriends i5 notebook a run for it's money.

I forgot to add my latest vostro1000 upgrade was a wireless N card (1505 Draft 802.11n) connecting to router at 270Mbps great for transferring large files to NAS box.

The *real* speed upgrade is an SSD - an OCZ Vertex 2 (SATA II), which *really* makes mine fast, together with the 8 gigs of ram.

Thanks so much for the info, BuzzTTC!

I have a Vostro 1000 too. It originally had 2GB (2x1GB DDR2 667MHz modules). I've just put 4GB and it's working pretty well!

I've bought 2 Kingston memory modules of 2GB each, exactly as yours. I'm running Ubuntu 64 bits and it can recognize all the 4GB.

Thanks man!

It may or may not work for all though -- the official limit is 2G.

Not true. I have 2x 4 GB = 8 GB running fine in my Vostro 1000.

Hi Folks,

I know this is a really old thread, but just in case somebody is looking for more up to date info:

I recently loaded Win 7 x64 with 4GB Ram on my old Vostro 1000.

No Problems with 4GB Ram or drivers whatsoever. Windows automatically found them all, and everything is running smoothly including youtube videos.
