Inspirion sees device plugged into USB but won't plug and play.

Inspirion 6000 running WinXp (yeah I know but it's what I got). It was in regular use until about a year or two ago then stored. Brought it back out for a project and when I went to plug in a wired mouse that I used to use with it, it wouldn't recognize it. I figured there was an issue with the mouse so got a new plug and play wireless mouse/keyboard and when I plug the dongle in, it says " 2.4G Keyboard Mouse" but can't install it. I've flashed the bios and nothing. Any ideas?

Hi Rcarpadus,

Good work on troubleshooting. I would suggest you to run the test on USB ports on the system.

1.       Open the link http://dell.to/14YjKb2

2.       Select ‘Hardware’ under ‘Choose a Diagnostic Type’.

3.       Select ‘USB’.

4.       Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.

5.       Let me know if the results.

Also, Please consider reinstalling Chipset drivers on the system.

Please let me know if this helps.

Missed that test the first time. thanks for the link. Ran the test and it says "USB Ports" "USB Port test passed" then the other one says "USB Composite" "USB Status Test" results - (fail symbol) - "Cannot R" then I can't see the rest of the word.

Downloaded and ran R114079.exe chipset driver and no change. Can't read a storage USB chip or run a plug and play keyboard/mouse. The USB chip lights up when plugged in and the laptop indicates it's been plugged in it doesn't show on "my computer".

Hi Rcarpadus,

I would suggest you to run a thorough test on the system and the USB ports. You can download MyDell from the link below and run the PC CHECKUP to check for issues

Please let me know the findings.
