I helped my friend to upgrade to 2 GB + 1 GB = 3 GB. It does recognize 2 GB DDR2 SODIMM module in both slot. I checked the chipset spec, and it does support 2 GB SODIMM module. So Dell's spec is wrongly specified that it does not support 4 GB. Maybe they have a reason.

In theory, it support 4 GB (2 * 2 GB). Try it and keep the forum members updated

Even if you put 4GB into this computer it will not recognize all of its memory.

Go to www.gtopala.com and download SIW system information of windows free for home use run it from the desktop on the left side go down to motherboard click it you will see the the 1501 will show Maximum memory Capacity is 4096 MBytes .

This tells me the 1501 can run 4 gigs so i took my 1501 to my local computer shop and they installed 2x2 gig sticks of Hyundai Electronics ram and my 1501 has ran this ram for close to a year now i run Vista Ultimate 64 bit on it and it runs just fine .

I do not think Dell tested the 1501 with 4 gigs so thats why the manual only shows 2 gigs max my guess on this tho !

Edit my BIOS is 2.6.3 that may be the key to 4 gigs .

Finally I see someone installed 4 GB (2 * 2 GB) into Inspiron 1501. Thanks C3PO5 for the proof.

For those who keep saying Windows won't see 4 GB, please understand the memory address limitation.

32-bit operating system only can address upto 3 GB +.

If you use 64-bit operating systm, like Linux x86-64 (Fedora, SELinux, FreeBSD, Ubuntu), Win XP 64-bit, Win Vista 64-bit, Win 7 64-bit, Win 2000 64-bit, Win 2008 64-bit, Mac OS X, then all memory up to 16,384 PB (2^64 bytes) is visible.

No motherbord or chipset can handle so much in another 10 years

I have just installed a 2G stick on a Dell 1501 running XP 32-bit service pack 3. It reads and uses the memory just fine. I will be putting in a second 2G stick now that I know it works. I know with 2 x 2G I wont get exactly 4G, but with 2.512G installed I am getting 2.4G usable.

The Bios is the original, 1.7.0.

For those of you who insist it won't work because of Dell's posted specs.....SHUT UP! If you don't know what you are talking about or have no first hand experience with the issue then stop ruining others search for reliable info.

neill808 - thanks for reviving this post.  I'm looking at going from 1+1 to 2+2, but now you have me thinking about 4+1!  I'm on bios 2.6.3, I believe, are you?  I haven't upgraded to a 64-bit OS, but if Vista 32-bit could use 4+1 as well as 2+2, I would give it a shot.

N_N: you need to run a 64bit OS to run that much RAM - Simply the 64bit OS runs more like a Server than a 32bit...
