Inspiron 1525 HDCP support
Inspiron 1525 laptop Model No. PP29L with Intel Graphics Media
Accelerator X3100, connected to flat panel TV (47" Philips LCD TV)
using the HDMI port, the desktop looks great - 1920x1080, 60Hz, 32-bit color...
The problem is trying to play high definition movies (HD-DVD).
I am using XBox HD-DVD drive and CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra v7.3
The movie will play on the notebook screen, but not on the TV
connected to the HDMI port. PowerDVD stops the playback
and displays the following warning:
"Failed to enable HDCP.
Please switch to analog output (VGA/D-Sub) and try again.
(Error Code = 0110). Please run the BD/HD Advisor tool."
CyberLink HD/BD Advisor reports "Video Connection Type: Digital (without HDCP)"
I know the TV supports HDCP, use it with Toshiba HD-A30 and with desktop PC
running XP/PowerDVD/nVidia 8600GT.
The Inspiron laptop is running Vista and has the latest video driver from Dell support...
Has anybody else experienced the same issues?
The Intel Graphics Guide lists the Content Protection for Intel® GMA X3100/ GM965, GL960 as COPP/PMP w/HDCP.
Can somebody confirm that the HDMI port on the Inspiron laptops supports HDCP?
The Blu-Ray 1525 Inspirons have the same video card:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/bluray_lt?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Is this a configuration issue, for exampe HDCP is not enabled by default?
Thanks in advance! Ivo.
p.s. While the Intel chipset (GM965) supports HDMI with HDCP
http://softwarecommunity.intel.com/articles/eng/1488.htm
"The HDMI solutions currently out for Intel graphics consist
of a third-party chip which sits on the SDVO bus (muxed into PCIe)
and does the conversion from video data to HDMI signalling. ...
The HDCP handshake occurs with this solution"
http://softwareblogs.intel.com/2008/04/22/hdcp-hdmi-repeaters-and-you-well-me-anyway/
The second article talks about problems with A/V receivers acting as repeaters, while stating
that normal connection (motherboard <- HDMI -> HDCP compliant TV) works fine.
The comments describe HDCP issues even with direct connections - as in my case.
Maybe the third party chip doesn't support HDMI with HDCP...

I thought the Broadcom chip in 1525 will take care of the demanding HD video tasks. If a standalone $299 bluray players with one Sigma design chip can play blurays with no problem why a computer with Core 2 duo, GBytes of memory, Hard drive, Intel graphics GMA X3100 and Broadcom's Bluray chip not be able to play more than 15 to 20 Mbps at 720p?
Inspiron 1525, Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 2.4GHz, 800Mhz, 3M L2 Cache
4GB, DDR2, 667MHz
320G 5400RPM SAMSUNG Hard Drive
Vista Home Premium
Matshita 2X BluRay Drive
Roxio Creator 10 Premiere Blu-Ray

To give you a quick update: opened case with Intel Technical Support.
My question was about HDCP specifically and not playback of high definition video in general.
My model (purchased from Staples) does not have Broadcom Media PC card :(
- http://www.broadcom.com/press/release.php?id=1010620
I believe the issue is specific to the Philips TV, no fix for now.
I am about to give up… maybe future drivers and/or TV firmware will fix it.
Thanks for the replies. Ivo.

The initial response from Intel Tech Support (Thu 5/15/08 11:02 AM)
Hello Ivo,
Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.
1. We have confirmed the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family supports
High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)
http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31627303.pdf
2. We noticed that the graphics driver version you are currently running is 7.14.10.1409
and the latest Intel(R) Graphic Driver offered is version PV15.9 (7.14.10.1472).
To download the latest generic driver from the Intel Download Center, visit:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2800
Make sure to read the “Read Me” document that comes with the drivers prior to installation.
The latest version of the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family reference drivers is PV15.9
Before installing the above driver, we recommend you to review the following URL:
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-028594.htm
3. The issue you are experiencing has not been duplicated nor have other customers reported it
4. High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is embedded on the Mobile Intel(R) 965
Express Chipset Family; however, this feature is enabled after installing the latest Intel(R)
Graphic Driver.
…
Sincerely,
Allan J.

My response (Thu 5/15/08 3:24 PM)
Thank you for your timely response, unfortunately it did not solve the issue.
I manually installed the latest driver from the Intel site following the instructions
for the work-around: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-022355.htm
Still no go - the following information is from the CyberLink BD/HD Advisor log
- ...
- Graphics Card : Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
- __dwItemID=1301__ : Adapter Compatibility: Intel Corporation
- __dwItemID=1302__ : VideoProcessor: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
- Graphics card video memory : 448 MB
- Graphics Card Driver : 7.15.10.1472
- ...
- Software Player : PowerDVD 7.3.3730.0
- Video Connection Type : Digital (without HDCP)
Your statement "3. The issue you are experiencing has not been duplicated nor have
other customers reported it" made me try with another DVI/HDCP monitor (24" Acer x243w)
and surprise: the CyberLink Advisor reports connection type Digital (with DHCP)
So it is an issue between Intel and Philips - the Dell laptop with Mobile Intel 965 Express
Chipset and the Philips LCD TV 47PFL7422D/37. Btw, I use the HDMI inputs on the TV
with other sources: Toshiba HD-A30 / HD-A3 players and desktop PC with PNY nVidia
GeForce 8600GT card (with DVI-HDMI cable) without any HDCP handshake issues.
Updated the TV firmware to the latest version: Q531U-0.64.14.18 released April 15, 2008
This was my last hope - very recent firmware - but it didn't help either...
There are reports of similar problems, even with the latest driver, please see
http://softwareblogs.intel.com/2008/04/22/hdcp-hdmi-repeaters-and-you-well-me-anyway/
For example, the latest reply/comment:
By André Strauch on May 2nd, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Hello,
so i tried the new 15.9 driver i don't get playback via dvi, i always get the error: that there is no hdcp
support. i reinstalled the system, i tried PowerDVD 7.3, i tried Total Media Theater, i tried PowerDVD 8
Ultra. No chance. So i borrow a Ati Radeon 3650 and it works, with PowerDVD 7.3, with PowerDVD 8.0
and with the Total Media Theater, no problem. I think Intel have to do there homework. Intel worries
me. One of the biggest company is unable to write graphicsdrivers. I only had problems, whatever i do
with this onboard graphic. I'm frustrated :(.
Greetings
André Strauch

1. In order to better isolate your issue, we need more detailed information.
Please reply to this e-mail with the answers to the following questions:
- What does your computer manufacturer have to say about the issues you are experiencing?
- Have you tried different Intel(R) Graphic Driver versions?
- Is there any other device connected to your system that may affect the Intel(R) Graphic Driver
from working properly?
- Are you using any of the following cable adapters/converters?
S-Video to HDMI / HDMI to HDMI / DVI to HDMI / VGA to HDMI
If indeed you are using any of the above adapters, did the laptop manufacturer provide them?
