Inspiron 1525 turning off

Hi there

Last night my Inspiron 1525 started to randomly switch off and restart itself.  It must have done it about 15 times with no warning or apparent reason.  It isn't overheating (have had that problem before).

Any ideas of what could be causing it?  It doesn't appear to be Windows related because it crashed during start up a few times.  When it restarts it takes ages on the first Dell screen and then goes into a 'did not shut down properly' menu.

It is incredibly annoying!

Thanks

Right, my IT person at work thinks it is the hard drive.  The crashes are now more frequent and when I initially try to turn it on the fan doesn't start and the screen doesn't come on, but the lights are on and the hard drive makes a whirring noise.

I'm obviously going to have to rescue as much stuff as possible, which will be tricky if it continually crashes.

Does anyone think it could be anything other than the hard drive before I go out and buy a new one?

Thanks
