Inspiron 17R SE - Cannot get built-in microphone to work

Can anyone tell me how to enable the built-in microphone, I am trying to use Gmail Chat and while the video works fine the microphone doesn't pick up my voice - the only way people can hear me is by using an external mic.

Can someone explain how to 'turn-on' the built-in microphone - I am using Windows 8.

I ran the 'Microphone' DELL Diagnostics test and I am not able to select an INPUT device from the dropdown.. can someone help?!

Here is my sound options in the taskbar

Hi zabius,

I would advise you to reinstall the audio drivers on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, then download the audio driver from Audio section onto the system and install it.

If the issue still persists, please follow the steps below to run the diagnostics for the Microphone on the system.

1.       Open the link http://dell.to/11MXNII
2.       Select ‘Hardware’ under ‘Choose a Diagnostic Type’.
3.       Select ‘Microphone’ under ‘Diagnostic Selector’.
4.       Click on ‘Run Diagnostics’ button.
5.       Let me know the results.

I have attempted to install the Conexant Audio driver for the 17RSE but get the following error.

Hi - I cannot run the Microphone diagnostics as I am unable to select an input device from the dropdown menu of Input & Output devices once the Diagnostics has loaded.

Hi zabius,

I would suggest you to flash the BIOS and then audio drivers on the system and check for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, then download the BIOS from BIOS section and Audio driver from Audio section on the system and then install it in sequence.

Please let me know if this helps.

If I flash the BIOS and it goes wrong... what do you suggest I then? I have never ever in my life needed to update the BIOS to enable a microphone? Besides there is nothing in the BIOS features that states one of the fixes relates to the microphone.... can you advise further...

Hi zabius,

You can be rest assured that as I am Dell technician telling you to update the BIOS. Keeping your system updated will remove if there are any issues with the hardware. Please update the BIOS and then the audio driver for issue resolution.
