Inspiron 5748 constantly connects and disconnects from wireless internet connection.....

I can log on to the internet using a cable between my laptop and router, however when trying to get on line wirelessly my laptop logs on to my isp, then a couple of seconds later disconnects, then immediately reconnects, then disconnects and so on.....

I have other laptops wirelessly connecting to the same router without issues.

I have tried this link http://dell.to/14Xsnmd  which did not identify any issues.

In a similar post, it was suggested to look at power saving functions, I’ve been and set these for maximum power.

This is probably connected... When the laptop first boots up, I get a pop-up box saying;
BTTray.exe Application error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)
Click OK to close the application.

I’m not sure if I’m using the correct driver as I’ve found too many choices. Perhaps using my service tag number you could identify the correct driver to use please.

My laptop is an Inspiron 5748 running Windows 7 (not 8) Service tag<ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> . It was supplied with Win 8, but due to instabilities I reformatted and now running with Win 7.

Thanks in advance for any help to get me on my way :)

I did another revue of my power settings and changed the setting for use on battery to the same as on mains for maximum power. I then un-installed the drivers, then re-installed. I'm very pleased to say the machine seems to be running fine now, though not sure which of the two actions did the trick.

Thanks for your support :)

I've now loaded this driver - Realtek RTL8106E-US & RTL8111G-US Ethernet Controller. I no longer get the BTTray message, however I still can't get a constant wireless connection.

Still not sure if its the correct driver.

I'm now using a USB wifi dongle to connect wirelessley as a temporary stop gap in the hope someone with suitable knowledge can guide me to fix my issues.

UncleSteve,

Go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag number, then select your operating system. Under Network, download and install the latest drivers.

Try these tweaks....

Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your network adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.

Sorry, forgot to add that I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security for virus and firewall.

Steve,

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your post.

I've already been through your suggestions.

With the drivers, there are 3. 2 for WiFi and 1 for wired. I've tried them all.

Regarding the power settings I've set them all to maximum performance for all the mains options, however I'll check the battery settings, just in case that does anything.

I'll post back later. I'm currently waiting for the Dell site to carry out some diagnostics, but I think it got stuck as it has not progressed for the past hour.

Steve

UncleSteve,

Here is the Dell Wireless 1704 WiFi + Bluetooth Driver I see.

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapter, right click on Dell Wireless 1704 WLAN Half Mini-Card, left click on advanced. bandwidth capability, change to 20/40mhz

See if that helps your connection.

Is the problem only in your residence? Can you run Network Interface and post that information back here.

Rick, I too am having wifi connection issues on my new Inspiron 5748. I have solid wifi signals on ALL my other devices and my 5748 will connect then drop and show that the connection is "Limited". I am posting my system info for you to look at below. I have done the tweaks on the power settings as you have suggested and changed my network card to 20/40.... I am about ready to box this back up and ship it back to Dell...... Thanks in advance

bardcr,

What virus program and firewall are you using? Do you know what virus program was installed on this computer when you first received it?

Can you connect in the same room as the wireless router? How about the next room? Windows 8.1 does not support WEP Security. On a system that is connected to your network, can you run Network Interface and post the information back here.

Here is the Dell Wireless 1704 WiFi + Bluetooth Driver I would try.

Try these tweaks....

Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your network adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapter, right click on Dell Wireless 1704 WLAN Half Mini-Card, left click on advanced. bandwidth capability, change to 20/40mhz

Click on Advanced. Look for Antenna Diversity. Change the Antenna Diversity from Auto to Aux.

Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.

Windows firewall and Avast virus. Came with McAfee.

It will not connect even next to the wireless router.

I will do a removal and re-install using the driver you have suggested. Below is the Network Interface information you requested.

Thank you in advance.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

C:\Windows\system32>netsh wlan show interface

There is 1 interface on the system:

Name : Wi-Fi
Description : Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)
GUID : f8c59825-d0bb-4300-a80b-0570e618fd61
Physical address : 90:48:9a:f4:da:8b
State : disconnected

Hosted network status : Not available

Rick,

I thought I was correct, but I did check my wireless router and it is NOT running WEP security.

I did all of the above including downloading and installing the new driver for the Dell Wireless 1704.802 you suggested. Got the same results, so I re-booted and turned the wifi off then back on, still getting a "Limited" connection.

Thanks in advance for your help.
