Inspiron 6400 Bios / Hypermemory limit

Actually, I have not found any solution to switch off/limit the size of main memory, my ATI Mobility X1300 grabs to be used as Hypermemory: 256MB. Because Vista is memory hungry, I want to limit the amount of memory reserved for Hypermemory. On all other PCs I had, there was a possibility in the BIOS to limit the amount of shared memory, for Intel Integrated graphics usually.
Why is this not possible with my DELL Inspiron ?

Or is this only a special trick to sell more expensive main memory for Vista machines ?

Why is everybody so darned paranoid... They are out to get me, OOOOOOOOOOOOH! Yeah it is just a special Trick... gotcha!

How much Ram do you have ? If you have 2 GB you should be fine.

Did you look at the " Advanced " section of the ATI Catylist Control center under UMA Frame Buffer Settings?

Sorry, I only have 1GB memory on my machine.
I can not find the setting you are talking about in Catalyst Control centre. I have version 2007.0202.1923.34565, which is the latest one from DELL.
Which one do you have ?

Start the CC in the advanced mode, under the Graphics Tab>> Integrated Graphics>> UMA Frame Buffer on the right side there will be a setting " Size Of UMA Frame Buffer "  with a drop down selection: Options are 16, 32, 64, 128. or 256 MB Ram. Mine is currently set to 128 MB.

I am running version 1.2.2460.36742.

Sorry again, I do not have the settings you mention.
However, I am wondering about your driver version. It looks like an (old ?) version for Windows XP, not for Vista.
The actual Vista (32 bit) version I installed now from ATI shows me the following info:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Driver Packaging Version 8.342-070202a1-042861C-ATI
Catalyst® Version 07.2
Provider ATI Technologies Inc.

Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0471
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.0681
Catalyst® Control Center Version 2007.0202.1923.34565

Graphics Card Manufacturer Powered by ATI

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I can not download Catalyst for Windows XP from ATI, because they first check the HW platform, and then they complain, that their Catalyst is not supported, I should contact my HP manufacturer instead. Which is DELL.
And their XP driver shows 128MB Hypermemory, but in XP (I have dual-boot Vista/XP). And there also is NO possibility to change the amount of Hypermemory used. But 128MB is OK for me on XP; would be OK for me on Vista, too.

So are you running Catalyst for XP on Vista successfully ?

I am still hesitating to try that, because "Restore Points" do not work for me because of "Dual Boot".

BTW: The 319MB Hypermem should consist out of 64MB dedicated memory + 256MB system memory.

Thanx in advance for your patience.

the Hypermemory is distributed dynamicly, there is no need to modify default  setting.

Thanx for your posting. I had the same idea, or better hope. But I doubt it, because:
- Task manager in Vista shows me: 1021 MB Physical Memory, In Cache: 679 MB, Free: 19MB. The difference more or less perfectly fits for Hypermory, which is 319Mb according to Catalyst Control Centre.
And this difference (or the 319 MB in Catalyst) never change. Why does it need so much ? I disabled all "pretty" display features already, and for my display (1280x800x32 bit colors) 64MB would suffice.

Catalyst in XP (I have Dual-Boot with Vista) always shows 128MB instead.

To be noted, Cataly for Vista and for XP are not the same version.

One more reason to put your response in doubt: Using Device Manager-Resources, is shows large amounts of memory in use. For what ?
