Inspiron 7000 won't start - any help appreciated!

Hi. My first post here. A friend of mine asked me to look at her Inspiron 7000, which refuses to start. When the power button is pressed, the three LEDs next to it sometimes flick on for a fraction of a second, then go off again and nothing happens.
I don't hear fans or anything happening at all. The only sound i do hear is a faint whine like a power inverter when the AC power is connected.
The battery charges normally, and the problem is the same even after i removed the optical and hard drives. The behavior is the same on AC power and on battery power.

Does anybody have any idea what could be the cause of this? I have a lot of experience with Macs, but this is my first time troubleshooting a Dell. Could this be a loose motherboard power connector or something?

I don't mind taking the unit apart, but i want to know what to look for, or if it's a known problem or something.

Thanks...

-robin

ps. My friend mentioned that previous to the computer going totally dead, it had shut itself off unexpectedly several times. Not sure if that helps or not, but that led me to think of a loose connector somewhere..

robomac,

It sounds like the processor may be bad, try the following.

>Remove the ac adapter and the battery for two minutes then reconnect the ac adapter and try powering the system up.

>Remove the ac adapter, the battery, and the harddrive then put the harddrive back in and try it on ac power only.

>Try starting the system without the harddrive in the system.

>Remove hardware components one at a time and see if the system will start after that.

If the system will not power up with a certain hardware component install then that component may be faulty.

If the system will not power on no matter what, then the processor or motherboard may be faulty.
