Inspiron N5010 enter system password
My dad bought this for me overseas and I'm not from the US so I can't actually call support. My laptop haven't been used for a while because I know it's not functioning properly and when I turned it on again, it won't boot. There's just the Dell logo with press f2 and f12 (but they won't work too) and then the screen goes black with "enter system password" and I have no idea what it is. I remember getting this laptop fixed but the technicians can't get through this system password thing. How am I going to get the password? And I get through this, will I be able to restore it to factory settings? I'm trying to format my hard drive. Thanks

It's asking for the password right after the Dell logo so I think it's the BIOS password. There's no error displayed anywhere, just a blue box in the middle of a black screen asking for a password.
I tried restarting using the FN and power button but after a few seconds it just turns itself off. I think my laptop may have a hardware problem. Thanks anyway

Hi Jerns,
Please help me understand if computer is asking for windows password (where the computer boots up after windows log on screen?) or Is it after Dell logo(BIOS password).
Once you get a BIOS password screen, look for error that is displayed at the bottom half of the screen.
To isolate and ensure it’s not a hardware issue, run diagnostics on the computer using FN and Power button (Restart the computer by holding down the FN and Power button simultaneously). Let the diagnostics complete.
I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.
I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.
Awaiting your response!

Hi Jerns,
We need to have the error code to reset BIOS/Hard drive password.
If the computer is asking for the windows log in password and if you are unable to log in to windows, Kindly private message the service tag. I will review the system details and take the case further.

Hi taabi,
Do you get the password prompt on a black screen just after Dell logo is displayed at startup?
Please provide me the name as it appears in records via Private Message (Click on my name and click on Start Conversation). I will look into it and take it further from there.
For security reasons, I would request to remove the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the post as it is considered personal information.

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. Girlfriend tried putting a password on but we think she maybe had caps on because we just can't get her password to work. I am the registered owner, so I think I can get a master password or something?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
Would like to know if the system is asking for BIOS password or Windows login password?
If it is the BIOS password, you may provide the service tag of the computer and the name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation) so that I can check the further course of action.
Please reply if you have any questions.

I have the same problem (Inspiron 15R N5010).
I reseted the BIOS to factory defaults and since then it appears the message "Enter System Password" at boot up.
I NEVER set a password, so I don't know the password.
If I type 3 times a pass then I am getting a PPID string and the laptop turned off.
How can I unlock it?

You need to call Dell with verification of ownership.
