Inspiron N5110 Starting Issues

I have an issue starting my DELL laptop. I was using it perfectly 24 hours ago in the US, but just flew home to Ireland with it in my hand luggage and removed it this evening to find that it wouldn't start up properly.

When I press the start button it sounds as though it is starting up but it doesn't boot properly and it goes quiet after a few seconds. The screen stays completely black. The three lights on the keyboard do light up in a sequence.

They light in the following sequence:
Left
Middle
Right
Middle
Left (Stays On)
Middle (Stays On)
Right (Stays On)
They all stay on for a second together and then all turn off completely.

The left and right lights on the front left of the laptop are also both on constantly.

Once the computer is on, when I press on switch the computer turns off instantly without any shutdown process.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what the issue might be and how to solve it? I feel there may be an issue with the motherboard but if someone could help out that would be of great help. Thanks

Hi Ruaha,

Try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the power supply.
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power supply. Try to restart the computer and check.

Also, check if there is any issue with the LCD by running LCD BIST (Built in Self-test). To run the LCD BIST, press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the power button, then release both at the same time. This will initiate A grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green then White, to allow you to inspect the entire LCD for color purity on each screen and to better identify defect such as cracks in the LCD or stuck pixels that may not be apparent in a normal viewing mode.

If the LCD BIST works, try running the diagnostics on the system to confirm hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.

If the issue still persist, remove the battery from the system and try powering on the system with only AC Adapter connected. Also, if the power button stays solid white, please connect the system to an external monitor and check if you are getting any display on it or not. This will help us isolate the issue further.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.
