Inspiron N7110, External USB hard drive issues
I purchased this Inspiron N7110 three weeks ago. I also purchased a new Western Digital Passport 1TB external HD. I have an external Western Digital workbook 500 GB HD as well. When I am working with either or both of my external drives connected to any of my 3 USB ports, they will simply stop functioning and I have to reboot in order to regain functionality. I performed a hardware test with the Dell Support Center software that was preinstalled. The USB controllers passed the test.
Can anyone please help me or point me in a direction so that I can fix this issue? It is becoming very annoying, as I work off my external HDs.
Thanks in advance.

Try using a dual USB connector to give it more power.

Search for the other threads on this board about dell laptops and non-functioning usb 3 ports.

I have searched. I've searched the following queries:
"USB 3.0"
"USB 3.0 stops"
"USB 3 stops working"
"USB 3 quits working"
and
"USB 3"
I have not found any issues like mine where the USB 3.0 ports work for a little while and then stop. There was one thread that LOOKED as if it may help, but when I click on the link, I get an error saying that the thread is no longer available.
But thank you so much for your insightful response.

Despite your sarcasm, I will still try to help you. Here are just a few of the links that I found by simply searching for "usb3".

My Dell Inspiron Laptop USB 3.0 ports was dropping out (loosing connections)
to my external USB 3.0 Hard drives. Sometimes, I could watch a movie on my USB 3.0 drive for 38 minutes and then media player would stop working. Sometimes I could only watch the movie for 15 seconds!
Dell tech replaced the USB daughter board (containing the two USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 ports).
My Laptop is working great!
