Installing Win 7 on Inspiron 1520

I am looking to upgrade my Inspiron 1520 from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 OS. I would like to know if this is possible before upgrading components on my laptop.

Thanks!

ksudarsan,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Click the link below to run the Win7 upgrade advisor to see if your system can run windows 7.

If it can run Windows Vista 32 bit, it can run Windows 7 32 bit no problem. Likely it can run the 64 bit version but you should check the upgrade advisor. You can use the 32 bit drivers with Windows 7 except for the bluetooth. See my wiki A Clean Install of Windows for full instructions.

The Upgrade adviser OKed my 1520. But there's no way I've found to make the install work.

Right after the install starts it hangs, an asks for a driver for the cd/dvd .  Dell does not make one and I've not been able to find one else where.  The is no way around the that I've found. End of install.

It hangs where, are you stuck on this screen?

May I ask what installation media you are using. Does you Installation DVD contain Service Pack 1 and does it contain the media refresh update?

At this screen have you attempted loading SATA Drivers:

My last post on this thread was 2 years ago since then I have made unofficial driver sets:

The software you pointed me to is for hard drives not cd/dvd. I tried installing it any way but windows will not accept it.

I am using a download from Digital River, Win 7 Pro. ISO burn to both DVD and USB. Both hang at the same place and ask for the cd/dvd driver. Installing from USB and pulling the DVD drive didn't help.

Any other ideas.

The most probable cause is an incomplete download. What .iso are you downloading and what size is the .iso you have? e.g. X17-58997.iso?

X17-59183.iso should be 2.4 GB and X17-59463 should also be 2.4 GB.

I am downloading them again. I've tried both x17-59183.iso and x17-59463, both hang at the same spot.

I've delete these files so i don't know the exact size but it was over 2 gig.

Downloaded  x17-59463 again ,it is 2,097,154 kb, it shows up in my download fold as complete, and it doe's start the installation process, but hangs for the driver install.

That's still incomplete X17-59463 should be 2,504,372 KB. See here, I have reproduced the issue twice with some of the other .isos which have incompletely downloaded at 2,097,154 KB:
