Intermittent Crackle/Skip in Audio Through Speakers and Earphones

Starting last night my speakers started getting an intermittent crackle/skip through my speakers while listening to music.  The speakers I'm using are the internal ones in the laptop so there are no external jacks to check.  The problem is not these speakers, however, as when I plugged in my earphones I still get the crackle.

I've made sure all my drivers are up to date and I went through the FAQ on the forum here.  I uninstalled Dell SupportAssist and made sure that DellDataVault, Dell Diag Control Device and Dell System Analyzer Control Device are all disabled.

I also ran the diagnostic scan here on the dell site.  Nothing wrong.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on an Inspiron 15 purchased a little over a year ago.

Any ideas?

Hi milletclark,

Thank you for reaching out to us here, we appreciate you trying a few troubleshooting steps on your own. As per the post you have mentioned that the audio drivers were up to date, however we request you to download the latest audio drivers from our support website for your system, uninstall the drivers that are currently installed on the system and also uninstall any audio software that you find under programs and features and then restart the system and re-install the audio drivers that you would download. We also request you to check and update the BIOS on the system. Please read through the installation instructions carefully before you update the BIOS on the system and please let us know of the outcome.

Any ideas?

Try using Windows System Restore if you have a restore point earlier than when the crackling initially occurred yesterday.

If you are running on battery power, try plugging in.

Sorry about the incomplete information. I knew I'd forgotten something when I posted.  I have a Inspiron 15 3542.

Okay, so I've successfully uninstalled the driver but now I can't seem to reinstall it.

I downloaded the driver for my laptop from the dell website.  I opened the file, wizard ran, claimed to be installing everything, asked to me to reboot.  I did and it did and then... nothing.  The driver still isn't there.  For some reason the installation failed without anything in the system throwing up a - hey we have a problem - notification.

All this has been with the computer plugged in.  Unplugging it and replugging it in has made no difference.

Hi milletclark,

Please let us know if you have updated the BIOS as well on the system. And also we request you to create a new user account and check if the same issue is observed under the new user account.
