Laptop freeze after BIOS Update for Dell Inspiron 14z 5423

From the DELL technical support website, I downloaded the BIOS Update. On executing the file it asked me system will reboot.

The system has frozen and I cannot restart my machine. I am using Windows 7 (64bit)

Please help to restart/restore old BIOS settings!

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Try powering up again.

If that doesn't get it going, either the mainboard needs to be replaced, or you need to have a shop un-solder the BIOS chip, flash it externally and then resolder it.

Hi aditi0209,

Please try the reset button which is at the back of the laptop as shown in the picture below. Also run diagnostiics if reset works. To run diagnostics follow the below link.

Hi Shrikanth,

I tried to reset by pressing the reset button at the back as suggested by you. However, after pressing the reset button and switching on the machine it makes beeping noises (three beeps).

Kindly suggest further action to be taken.

Thank you for the update aditi0209. I would request you to reset the laptop once again. If you still happen to get 3 Beeps it indicate a mother board failure. Please check your warranty using the below link

I'm facing the same issue.

A BIOS update was recommended by Dell's own driver update software (I think it's called My Dell or something similar) for my 14z (5423). I followed the instructions on the screen and after the automatic reset it never booted again. The screen is completely black and  a series of 3 beeps keeps being repeated. Dell's tech support says the mother board must be replaced and that I must pay for it since I may have caused the update to fail on my own (how?!).

It's amazing how a situation like this can happen without any reaction from Dell.

I have the same problem. I installed a new hard drive in an Inspiron 14z 5423 and had installed all the latest drivers and updates, and saw the latest BIOS update, Version A13  that "Dell recommends applying this update during your next scheduled update cycle. The update contains feature enhancements or changes that will help keep your system software current and compatible with other system modules (firmware, BIOS, drivers and software).". I ran the BIOS update from windows and after it tried to restart, nothing but black screen now. There must be a way to fix this other than replacing the mother board. It's out of warranty but in my opinion, this is Dells fault (are they trying to sell parts?). I've repaired computers and updated BIOS for nearly 20 years now and have never had a problem like this. I will never try to follow Dell's advice again.

Yeah, that generic <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU>doesn't do a thing. Dell ruined the laptop. I won't be taking their advice again, or buying their products!

I had same issue. Disconnecting battery, black tablet (may be RTC battery), holding about 30 sec power button worked for me! Notebook live again, thank you! BIOS version remained old.
