Laptop just shows black screen on start up?

I switched my Dell Laptop on today and although it's on and the screen is on too, it's just showing a black screen.

I've tried pressing F2 and F12 upon start up but it doesn't get so far as to allow me to use this option.

I've also tried connecting my laptop to my TV through a HDMI cable to check if it was just the monitor not working but that didn't work either.

I've tried taking the battery out as well and replacing it and nothing is changing.

I have no idea what has caused this at all, I haven't noticed any strange behaviour from it recently so does anyone have any suggestions what may be wrong with it or how to fix this problem?
