If the system is overheating, it will throttle back the CPU speed. First run a full diagnostic on the system to verify that the fan is working properly. F12 at powerup to get into the Dell diagnostics.
the fan is working, no problem there. My question is, to DELL, why the CPU-speed never reduces? It's always on maximum 1,2Mhz(tested with I8kfanGUI v.3.1). Why don't DELL have a software like SpeedswitchXP V1.52 to control the CPU?
I have to say that this is a problem only on D430 with Intels Centrino Duo platform with a low-voltage U7600 Core.
I8fanGUI always says the full MHz of the system. i know my speedstep is working and I8fanGUI always says 2500MHz in cpu speed.
both vista and xp have their own programs to control the speedstep feature, so why would dell make their own? power options in the control panel lets you adjust some power features. (more so in vista, xp doesnt have as many). with vista, in advanced options you can adjust max cpu frequency for each profile (power saver/balanced/high performance and plugged in or battery for each)
i dont know about xp, but vista's task manager-resource monitor you can see the effects of the speedstep witht the cpu frequency.
do all 8 systems run 60-70 C or just yours? that does seem hot. if it is all 8 then its probably a design flaw, but if its just yours then it might be dusty or the thermal compound could be bad or user.
by user i mean, as much as they are called "lap"tops they arnt ment for your lap. the intake for the fan is right on your leg and is blocked when it is on your lap. keep it on a desk or table.
and finally, if it is a design flaw. try an external cooling pad to help out the systems fan...
I have tested 2 of D430 over the weekend and can tell you that the construction and it's small fan results to the heat. It doesn't matter if the cpu rans on 790Mhz or 1,2Ghz, the fan starts running at 60 celsius and don't stop even when I shut down all active programs.
Have tested to start up both laptops at same time and just leave them on, cpu ran att 790Mhz and after 14 min the fan started on both and ran for 4 hours until I shut them down.
Have to tell the users that the construction of this laptops forces them to live with the noisy fan.
