Latitude E6420 screen replacement 1366x768 to 1600x900

HI DELL Support

I have a DELL E6420 with a faulty LED screen (WLED 1366 x 768). I notice that the E6420 also has an anti-glare  HD+ screen option (1600 x 900). Can I replace my faulty screen with the higher resolution screen?

Yes, assuming you get a screen known to be compatible with the system (don't just buy any screen - notebooks work only with those screens they ship with from the factory!)

Thanks. So  if I am able to replace it with an LED type backlit 1600x900 display it should be OK. Also can you give me the DELL part number and also the manufacturer and manufacturer part numbers for a 14" WLED HD+ 1600x900 display supplied with DELL E6420.

Regards

I called DELL spare parts and gave the agent my service tag number. he was able to confirm that DELL model 'WJ139' (HD+ WLED 1600x900) was compatible with my current faulty 1366x768 (MJ154) LED display. Still not absolutely sure...

Also wondering about the video cable. i believe the connector on the LED display as the same (40pin) so therefore I'm guessing my cable should be OK.

Can someone in DELL Tech support confirm that they are in fact compatible and the video cable is the same. Thanks in advance. There's not much price difference from DELL so I'd prefer to replace with higher res screen.

Model: DELL Latitude E6420, service tag: <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

A quick search indicates that part was used in the E-series so it should work.  You should get a new data cable for it though - even if the cables look the same outside, it's very often true that cables for higher-resolution displays have more wires connected than those for lower-resolution displays.

All sorted. Got my screens mixed up. MJ154 is 1600x900 and the WJ139 is the 1366x768.

Thanks for your help.

Emeak,

Thank you for describing how you switched screens.

Did you need to purchase a new cable?

Thanks!

upgrading my E6520 from a 1366x768 to 1920x1080 did require me to upgrade the video cable so I would assume it would be the same for the E6420.

For reference, I believe the Dell Part number for the E6420 video cable that supports the HD+ 1600x900 resolution is XJJFC.

That's actually not correct. MJ154 is for glossy and WJ139 is for matte. Both are 1600 x 900.

I have successfully upgraded my E6420 to 1600 x 900.

The parts necessary are:

1 - Flex Ribbon Cable XJJFC Flex Ribbon Cable (mine included an ND2PD LED board, not sure if original works, do research)

Flex Ribbon Cable XJJFC

1 - WJ139 (matte) or MJ154 (glossy) LCD

You MUST use the XJJFC Flex Ribbon Cable with the new LCD. I tried to use the original cable and it did not work.

HOPE THIS HELPS!

I am having a problem with my display, as black areas flicker red, light blue colours are also changing to red after the display has been on for a short while.

Can you tell me where you bought your display from?  Also if you you have any opinion on matte or glossy?

Thanks,

Thanks for the information. The original cable of my Dell LATTITUDE E6420 screen is PAL50 LVDS CABLE Single Channel P/N: DC020019N200 REV:2.0 (AO1) FOXCONN HA 11/08/05. Old screen is 1366x768. The replacement screen that I bought with 1600x900 resolution did not work properly. I am attempting to change the cable to HD+ to enable the higher resolution. I was wondering how difficult it is for the conversion? I would appreciate if you can send me a link on the HOW-TO-VIDEO tutorial of the installation of the new cable. How can I tell that mine has ND2PD LED board included? Thanks for the help

Did you have to take any additional steps with the BIOS, etc?

I purchased a WJ139 screen, and a new back-cover assembly for my E6420.  The back-cover assembly included the XJJFC ribbon cable and the ND2PD LED board).

However, the only mode I am able to select for the screen is still 1366x768; the BIOS reports this as the "native resolution".  The only quirk I've encountered is that the diagnostics routine reports that I should "Check the LCD Cable."  The screen displays fine, and I have reseated the cabled a few times.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you intended to get a higher-resolution screen, that's not what you were sold.  WJ139 is a 1366X768 screen.

Hi,

Out of curiosity, how hard was it to replace the ribbon cable?  I've been looking for a video on how to do this, but haven't been able to find one that deals specifically with only the ribbon cable.  I did, however, see one video where the ribbon cable was detached from both the screen and the motherboard.  It looked like a lot of tear down to be able to get to the motherboard end of the cable.  Did you have the same experience?  Or is there a shortcut?

Thanks.
