M6500 Maximum Memory / Specs for same

Recently picked up a Precision M6500 with an i5 - 520m CPU. It has two DIMM slots which currently have 2 x 2GB DDR3 @ 1066mhz ram in them.

I am wanting to max out the memory in this machine, but I have read several different specifications as to what the maximum memory actually can be.

It seems that the higher M6500's with Quad processors can do 4 x.8GB DIMMS since they have 4 DIMM slots (instead of 2), and they can handle 1600mhz and 1333mhz memory.

However, the lower level CPUs like the i5-520m can only handle 2 x 4GB DIMMS at 1333mhz or lower.

Is this accurate or is it possible to get 2 x 8GB (for 16GB) of memory in this machine?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Max RAM for a dual-core is 8G.  To use more, you need a quad-core CPU.

2X4 is max for this system.  Only the quad-core can go to 4X8 = 32.

Hello Kuhwks,

The Precision M6500 shipped with the dual processor will support only two memory connectors. Following are the dual core processors shipped with the system:

  • i7-620M, 2.66GHz, Dual Core
  • i5-540M, 2.53GHz, Dual Core
  • i5-520M, 2.4GHz, Dual Core

Hence your computer would support maximum of 16GB memory (2 x 8GB). System shipped with quad core processors, would support maximum of 32GB memory (4 x 8GB).

Hope this helps!

This is what I was assuming from all the references I read. However, I installed this 16GB kit, and the machine couldn't get past the BIOS. (ie Couldn't read the memory, at all.)

Did I miss an important spec that isn't jiving here, or is it possible I got a bad batch?

Is it possible the 10600 vs. 10666 could be the issue?

Hello Kuhwks,

DDR3 1600 MHz memory configurations are currently limited to 8 GB for the system. Please try the 1333Mhz 16GB (2 x 8GB) and check how it works.

Hope this helps!

Kuhwks,

Did you ever get the 16gb to work?

I have a M6500 i5 M580 dual core processor and was not able to install two different 8gb memory sets. we have the same mother board as the Quad core but cannot add anything into the two slots under the keyboard.

this has been very frustrating. My memory guys has no idea why it is not working based on what he has found searching the memry path.

Do you think there is a Bios update that will allow the 16gb configuration?

What is keeping it from working.

It's unlikely.  The mainboard is simply not designed to handle DIMMs over 4G each.

Hello, reading all threads on this, i have the M6500 core i5 M520, 2 memory bays and had the 1600Mhz memory 2 x 4 from crucial but this was not working, hanging on checking memory and not coming next the bios . Now I bought 2 x 4 1333 Mhz dimms dd3 sodimm 204 pinn from crucial excact the same problem. Downgrading the bios same problem, upgrading bios to the A10 same problem. in the system there a now 2 x 1 dd3 1066 and they work. Any other suggestions. Oh I upgraded the intel chipsetdrivers as well.

So I found that the M580 only allows 8 gb max. I would need to upgrade the processor to be able to bring that up to 24gb. but at that price i might as well buy a new laptop.

I see your processor has the same limit.

What date is on your BIOS?

Exactly the problem I am facing.

Is this a software issue or a hardware constraint?

Is there anyway to update the bios (it rev A10 for me) or chipset drivers or something to enable the system to have 16 GB memory?

:( its so frustrating to not get the laptop to work after all the issues in getting the ram and adding it.

Hello all did you guys ever figure the deal on the memory compatible issue with the Dell M6500 laptop.  I have about 10 of these I need to upgrade the ram on and I have tried 3 different sets of 8gig with no luck.  I even used the "crucial memory website" and that didnt work either.  I was thinking of trying to use Samsung OEM ram but 8gig instead of 4.  Please let me know what you have found out.

thanks
