Memory upgrade for Inspiron 13 5000 series (2 in 1)

Hi, this may seem like a stupid question, but I recently got the entry level Inspiron 13, 5000 series (i3, 4gb Ram). I want to upgrade the memory as it's a bit sluggish. Dell's site said this model only has one Ram slot. I've been told it actually has two. I'm a clumsy oaf and don't want to open the case unnecessarily (and break those awkward little clicky 'lips'). Can anyone tell me if there is one slot or two?

I ask because, if there is just the one, I'll go for 16, if it's two, I'll go for an 8 to make a total of 12.

Cheers,

Dave

If this is an Inspiron 5368 (newest 2-in-1 as of Aug 2016), it'll take up to two 8G DDR4 soDIMMs, total 16 G.

There are other models in this series with different memory configurations,so verify that yours is a 5368 before buying memory:

elsonbns, in your initial question, you asked if the 5368 supports 16GB modules.  Yes, it does, in fact the service manual for the 5368 clearly states that "Your computer supports 4 GB, 8 GB, 12 GB, and 16 GB dual-channel DDR4 memory of up to 2133 MHz."  But I think the point of your question was whether it actually supports 32GB (2x16GB), which is not listed as a supported configuration, right?

While it is true that Dell may not officially support a certain memory configuration (and therefore, Crucial will not list it as a possible option on their website), nonetheless, the configuration may still work perfectly fine.  But there is no question that you are on your own at that point!

I can vouch for this scenario with a couple of machines.  I had a recently retired 7520 that supposedly only accepted 8GB max (2x4GB), but I ran it for several years with 16GB (2x8GB) with no problem whatsoever.  Also, I recently started with a 5378 that has a limit of 16GB (2x8GB), but it runs fine with 32GB (2x16GB).  I do note that there was a slight hiccup in this last case because a certain BIOS revision caused a problem with this configuration, but it was fixed in a subsequent BIOS revision.

Since nobody has made any reports about 32GB with the 5368, there is some amount of risk with the proposition.  But here are the facts:

1.)  the machine officially supports 16GB modules (i.e. it has all the necessary hardware, logic, bits and pieces, etc. such that 16GB modules work--the service manual says so...),

2.) it has two actual slots and a 16GB module would presumably work in both (the manuals do not say anything about a 16GB module working in only one of the spots),

3.) the CPU and chipset supposedly support up to 32GB, and

4.) closely related models like the 5378 do support 32GB as 2x16GB.

Given the above, my guess is that 32GB would work, but it is just a guess!  Until somebody actually tries it, the doubt will remain.

If you are willing to give it a shot, presumably make your purchase from a vendor who would be willing to refund your money if it doesn't work.  And even if the machine appears to boot and function normally, it would probably be worth it to run a grueling memory test (i.e. Memtest86) just for the peace of mind.

We'd need to know the exact model number (i.e., Inspiron 5368, etc.) -- some have one slot;  others have two, and still others have soldered-in RAM.

The model number appears on the UEFI/BIOS screen -- F2 at powerup to check.

Check the service manual at dell support. Go Here for memory configuration.

Adding memory to a laptop will work better if you match the ram. If it has 2 slots replace both or match the one it has.

Here is the service manual for the Ins 13 5368 2 in 1--

Thanks, Mary. I've done a little research and it seems that 8gb of kingston hyperx fury ram ddr4 sodimm 2133mhz will work in the second slot alongside the pre-loaded 4gb of Dell Ram. I can't find any DDR4 Ram for sale on the ell site. I'd rather buy Dell than generic/Kingston. Can you point me in the right direction? Many thanks, Dave

Sorry, I thought you could see my earlier message. It's the Inspiron 13 (2 in 1), 5000 Series, running i3 and 4GB of DDR4 2133.

The Inspiron 13 5368 model (2016) will handle 16GB modules (4+16 or 16+16)? The manual tells that only total of 16GB is supported but the Intel chipset supports total of 32GB of RAM. Can I try 16GB DDR4 modules?

Not according to Dell - or Crucial.

Hi.

Yes, but I know that some users tried 16GB modules successfully with other Dell models. As they uses the same Intel Core architecture / chipset, I would like to hear if does anyone used 16GB modules on this Inspiron 13 5368 model with no issues. I don't see any reason for hardware limitations on this.

Hi verbage.

Yes, your understanding is right.

My question is just to have more confidence to use 16GB module, even with the service manual not specifying that (total of 32GB or 16GB modules each slot).

I will try the 16GB module from Crucial and then I will post here the results.

Thanks

Hi elsonbns, have you been able to try a 16GB module yet?  Should work according to the manual!
