My Dell Inspiron has vertical lines on it.

Hello

I was playing a game a few days ago and the bottom of my screen said that the color scheme had been changed to windows 7 basic.

I powered up my computer today and it had nothing but these really weird looking purple and pink and gray lines going down the bottom half of it and the top of it.        I can see the middle of it just fine.

I'm not a computer genius but can someone please tell me what is going on and how to fix it.

First thing to try is an external monitor -- see if it shows the same fault.  If it doesn't, the troubleshooting starts  with whether or not the system is under warranty -- if it is, call Dell.  If not,  disconnect and reconnect  both ends of the cable that runs between the mainboard and display panel.   Check the cable for damage and replace it if it's clearly damaged.

If that does nothing, replace the screen.

If the external monitor does show the same fault, you have a bad video chip or card.  Further troubleshooting and repair depends on the system model you have - post that and someone can assist you.
