My 'fn' key function stuck on

I bought a latitude second hand so no directions.  Somehow I have gotten 'fn' key funtion going so that it types numbers instead of letters for right hand keys.  It took me forever to type this.  Does anyone know how to turn this function off?

This is how first sentence would look if i didn't depress 'fn' key before striking righthand keys;

Thanks for the help.  I can type okay now.  I don't know how that got turned on.  Sometimes my cat walks on the keyboard though.

...which reminds me to ask.  I'm new to laptop usage.  Can I shut laptop up when I walk away so pet cannot walk on keyboard while I am away or will that shut it down?  If it shuts it down, is it shut down properly or will it cause it to need to do a system scan when I turn it back on.

Thanks

barb1283,

In Power Options in the Control Panel, you can control what happens when you close the lid.  The default is to do to Standby, and the system can be restarted by pressing the power button, but the system will go back to where it was when you closed the lid.  You can also have the system turn off when you close the lid.  This may not work correctly, because the hardware power management will also kick in when the lid is closed.  Safer to leave it on standby.

Obviously, with the lid closed, your cat's paws cannot turn on numlock, or cause any other problems.  Well, they could always pull at the cords attached to your system, but I do not have a solution to that one.

Okay.  Thanks.  Apparently that is what it is set for now.  In same area it lets me tell it what to do when I hit the 'sleep button'.  I don't see a sleep button.  Do all laptops have them.  My laptop is a 1998 version I think since it apparently came with Wnds 98 on it originally.  I see a 'pause/break' button though.  Is that it?  thanks for your help.

barb1283,

The Sleep button should be Alt+S.

my father is having the same problem.  However holding down the FN key and pressing F9 does not help.  Any other suggestions.  He also said when he hits the 0 key he gets the a star.......sounds rather strange to me.

He should turn off 'num lock'.  On my laptop there is a key called 'num lk'.  Apparently I hit num lk key by accident or my cat walked over my keyboard and did it.  When num lk is on, all the keys on the righthand side of keyboard translate into numbers and other characters, zero key is a asterik sign.
